On the Ford gearboxes , the Synchro hubs on the mainshaft were spaced so that there was minimum movement before the baulk rings gripped the gear that was being engaged . This clearance was adjusted by having different thickness circlips . These circlips are not very easy to find now , but you can machine spacing washers to do the same job . A bit of extra work , but if there is too much endfloat before the Baulk ring grips , then gearchanges can get difficult . |

Thank you so much Tel, can't believe someone takes care to help a foreigner! Yes, they are really hard to source and even though Mark at bearingkits is helpful he won't sell what is no more made. When its too difficult to have spacers machined, we use pieces of cans…
From you pseudo, I guess you too experienced the 901 gearbox. If you have to rebuild an old ford, you've better go for an Escort, almost all the parts, race or road, are rebuilt (even Mk2 bodies). Very few for the Capris. |

Yes Gordon, understood you're talking about 2-Stroke. May be Grant didn't get the full picture that some opposed pistons engines have two cranks et no head.
Did you find delta's part? Could it be from a Deux Chevaux Citroën? |

I have built several gearboxes for Historic spec Rally Escorts . Although not the cheapest , I find that these have some useful parts . https://www.burtonpower.com/parts-by...arbox-all.html Click on type of gearbox & it will have several pages of parts . |

There are a number of other videos around but I didn't think it was useful do link them, although in the States people seem to do some fairly wild things with them which can make for some entertaining posts. But then there seems to be creative people over there who will do fairly wild things with anything. |

I stumbled across this purely by accident (I think, though YouTube may have been doing some AI analysis on me I suppose) and it seems to have some general interest for a number of reasons - not least the sort of cars mentioned and the the political message involved plus the imminent, at the time, membership of the European Common Market.
British Motor Show 1962. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sItz5ZO2b9Y They simply couldn't film anything like this anymore. |

My first tow car was a 3 litre Rover . I paid £60.00. Brilliant tow car and also some fond back seat memories kissing and cuddling the girlies . Happy days .

They missed one particular new model from 1962. Sleek, powerful and still going well to this day

I say chaps, steady on!
At the other end of all of the scales ... I give you "The Morris Minor" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD79yY2diMI There's an interesting comment about 'in the day' tuning early in the comments. No comment I can recall about how capacious the rear seats might or might not have been. |

My first was an Austin 1800 towing my FF1600 and it was also a very good puller

My first tow-car was a Morris 1800 which I thought was great until my rally partner went upmarket and bought the Wolseley version. Mine had a small diameter Mota-Lita steering wheel fitted, which was fine until the power steering failed........ Fortunately I was quite a strong young man in those days There was plenty of room in the back of the land-crabs, I recall....... |

In the building trade it was to the stores for a long wait, or a left handed hammer. You'd probably get sued for bullying if you did those things now.

When my dad first started working in engineering in the early 1940's he admitted that he was very 'green'. Within the first couple of days he was sent a very complicated route through the factory and told to find 'Charlie' and ask him for a long weight. (Another engineering cliche). 'Charlie' gave him a full length strip of very wobbly 1" x 1/8" steel which he then had to carefully carry back through the factory!

Getting back to "odd ball" engines I have always been interested in all sorts of things that people have invented other than what is thought to be the norm.
Mostly they are overcomplicated and expensive to produce and not so fuel efficient and are just forgotten about. When I went to college in the 60s I drew up plans for a conventional 4 stroke engine but it had electronic valves controlled by solenoids instead of camshafts ! however back then there wasn't the very clever minute electronic gear that is available today that could be controlled by an ECU |

Gerard, I spotted two amusing gilets jaunes yesterday. One was covering a speed camera on the way into Arras, the other was protecting the modesty of a blow-up sex doll on the side of the road in Avesnes le Comte!
Also, spotted a pale blue Renault Dauphine filling up at a petrol station. Apparently my good lady has an aunt who was crippled for life by a Dauphine when she rolled it. She forever regretted not listening to her brother when he told her it would not be a good car to buy. |

I think it was supercharged. I see that Detroit Diesel is part of GM and the one I saw was a Ford or at least had Ford on the rocker covers. |
