Worst Touring Car Drivers
First and foremost, I mean worst BTCC Drivers but other under-performing Drivers from Touring Car Series are welcome too.

I'll start with G1 BSCC days.
Phil Martin-Dye was a waste of a front running Spice Racing Capri drive in '81. In the Group A years, the late Barry Sheene was pretty poor in the '85 Celica Supra. |

I arrived at the same time as the 2 Litre era.
Geoff Steel in 1994, finished no higher than 18th all season, only Ian Khan did worse but he at least scored a point the previous year. |

I wasn’t yet born when Sheene raced in 85, but I think he got a few top 3s before he had that crash at Thruxton.
Going by 1991-now, I’d say Russell Spence seemed incapable of keeping the car on the track and had quite a few prangs as a result. Being out of racing since 93 really seemed to show. And what about Farique Hariuman? The Proton was never the best car in the series, but still, he couldn’t even get a single point out of it. Compare to how his team mate SWS occasionally got the car perhaps higher up than it should have been and you see what a waste of a works drive to have Farique in the car |

Geoff seemed to have a few incidents and to be fair to Khan he only did half a season. He had one race in a Toyota, where he did quite well, then switched back to the Vauxhall, before leaving the series mid season. Geoff Steel though seemed unable of challenging the top privateers though |

Steve Robertson in 1996, the Mondeo may have been a dog but just 2 10th places and ranked lower than Independents and a Nissan driver? Will add further replies when it's daylight. |

Steve Robertson really couldn’t have joined Ford at a worse time. Really it was a good job they had Radisich in the car to drag results out of it. The only upshot was the Ford seemed more consistent over a race distance than in 95

I don't remember Barry Sheene being that rubbish. He was also a great showman/entertainer too, always giving the crowd value for money. There was a race at Oulton Park where he had to pit in the early laps (misfire maybe?) and he came back out later and waited for the front runners to have a great dice with them (Rouse & The Brode if I remember correctly) for a few laps, he was on their pace and very entertaining.

In fact I found out today Bazza was on pole for that Oulton race, so who knows what could have happened if he didn’t have that mechanical problem |

If you follow the official name, those are sedans 2 or 4 doors homologated with room for 4 people, modified or heavily modified to adapt them to track use. Jags, Ford Mustang, Comet, Escort or Sierra RS, Rovers, Opels or Vauxhalls, Mercedes, Bimmers and so on. Assuming your question was a genuine one.
Those categories was a good opportunity for car makers to promote their road going models. Which had few to do with the racing models but their external appearance. When chunderer says G1, he means Group1, car looking like a "normal" car. |

However the car was good enough to compete for wins, possibly even the title. Poor Barry went backwards as the year progressed. Perhaps if he'd had more testing it might of been different but he was certainly no Cecotto or Gardner when it came to moving from 2 to 4 wheels. |

Weak field in the top class though. Rouse was playing with them. It was such a shame that the entry was so limited that year.

True, but you can only compete against what you are up against

They changed the name to Touring Cars in the UK before your 25th Birthday....
There weren't many Saloon Cars still running in the 80s so BSCC seemed a bit daft. In fact, of the 40+ entrants in 1986, less than half a dozen drove saloons.... |

I guess some of that may come from when an interest was first shown in this form of racing.
When the BRSCC 'announced plans for a new championship to cater for “the competitor who wants to race the ordinary family car, to do so throughout an entire season against evenly matched opposition.”' I would imagine that most people thought Saloon Cars, and British Saloon Car Championship sounded perfectly fine. Did the change to BTCC in 1987 come with any objection from enthusiasts I wonder? And were they objecting to the name change, or the types of vehicle used? Although if this thread is specifically for Touring Car Drivers - does that mean it is a 1987-onwards focus? |
