19 year old Formula Holden driver Christian Murchison from Western Australia has enjoyed his first taste of F3000 in a private test session at Hungary's Pannoniaring with the Red Bull Junior Team on Wednesday. Murchison drove the number 16 car normally piloted by Brazilian Sauber F1 test driver Enrique Bernoldi.

Murchison completed around 40 laps of the demanding 4.8 km 18 turn Pannoniaring and ended the day with very impressive times. Other drivers to test on the day included the two Red Bull drivers Enrique Bernoldi and Ricardo Mauricio along with German Opel Team BSR Formula 3 driver Andre Lotterer.

Murchison arrived in Vienna on Tuesday and then embarked on the 3-hour drive to the circuit in Hungary. The rest of the day was spent pouring a seat for the West Australian teenager, adjusting belts and getting comfortable in the car. Wednesday afternoon saw Murchison hit the track for the first time ever in a F3000, and he was suitably impressed with the awesome speed of the high tech machinery.

"These cars are so incredibly fast !! Every corner was fast. The Pannoniaring is the hardest circuit I think I've ever driven at. It has absolutely everything you can imagineā€¦..slow corners, fast corners, chicanes, blind corners, everything!"

Murchison also noted the differences in styles required between a Formula Holden and a F3000 car.

"These F3000 cars require a different style all together from a Formula Holden. You have to drive up the corner at 260km/h, brake, drop a gear and then go flat out on the gas before you turn in ! You have to really make the cars squat to get them working properly. It's high commitment driving ! If you overstep the mark, you'll end up in the wall "

Speaking with Formula Holden from Hungary Murchison was delighted to have tested with the F3000 team.

"The Red Bull Junior F3000 team is a very professional outfit. I was delighted to have the opportunity to test with them in Hungary. Thanks also to Arthur Abrahams and the team at NRC Racing for assisting me in getting this test."

Murchison will now return to Australia for the final round of the Holden Australian Drivers' Championship at Mallala on August 27th, after catching up will fellow Aussie Alex Davison who is competing at Sachsenring in the Porsche Supercup this weekend.

I didnt hear anything about this happening but it certainly is good news for Christian and hopefully something may come of this.

according to channel 10's RPM show today ..Murchison has been offered tests with 8 different F3000 teams..of which he has completed only the one mentioned above..there will be further tests with at least another 3 teams before the end of the year and things are looking very promising for him as he has been discussed in Europe as a driver who doesnt bring funds to a team but then again he doesnt have to..seems young Christian is making quite a name for himself and there is even talk about him signing with red bull for 4 years worth inexcess of $7 million dollars..just proves that you dont have to have a huge sponsor or very rich parents to make it in racing today and he now has his foot in the door and all he has to do now is produce the goods and wait for the doors to open up for him.

Good luck Christian

Well done to Murchison. He should do well in those tests.

I hope he gets into F3000 because another Australian overseas is another one closer to F1
