Chevron B 9

think that eight or nine were built (eight according to the Chevron Story) but Barrie Smith quotes b09/dbe for his chassis. one is in cheshire, one in france, and one possibly in the states; anyone know any history? original owners of seven are known, but no chassis numbers. help!!

Japanese surgeon, Yuzabura Baba, has a B9 which he has raced in Europe in the last few years. Not sure of the chassis number, but I may be able to find out.

Great work Chris.

I noticed Chris Williams' Red Rose car described as a B9B at the end of the season: Autosport 15 Nov 1968 pp34,39: C. M. M. 'Chris' Williams, driving the Red Rose Chevron B9B with Lucas MAE, tied with Bev Bond and his Brabham-Holbay BT21. Could Red Rose have had a third car or was this merely his usual car updated with B9B bits?

Broeker's cars are a real puzzle to me.
1967 "Stebro Mk 4"
1968 "Stebro-Ford", "Stebro Interim" and Stebro-Chevron"
1969 either a Chevron B15B or a Stebro Mk 5
1970 Stebro-Chevron B9 or Stebro-Chevron B17B

It makes me wonder if Stebro built any further cars after 1967 or just described their Chevrons as Stebros. The "Stebro Interim" might have been the B9 and the Stebro Mk 5 might have been the B15.

1970 "Stebro" is definitely a Chevron B17B; Broeker may have kept the B9 as well, since in early 1974, after getting rid of the B17B he appears in something distinctly early 70s Chevron-like, before his new B27 turns up.

chris, excellent work with the numbers, i understood that Frank Lythgoe had two cars for Dave Berry & originally Digby Martland, Dave remembers going up to Bolton to assemble his car but could not remember any numbers, said it was something to do with age.

B9/F3/3 1968 Sports Motors/Schenken : 1969 Barrie Maskell

B9/F3/12 1969 Simon Saye

As per my book on Crystal Palace, data source Duncan Rabagliati.

Interesting:
Neither number on the build list from Chevron that I've been advised of [but will happily accept that those numbers were there on the cars at the time!]

Saye's car is described in press as ex Howard Heerey, and Heerey is allocated F3/16 in the build list. This suggests list wrong.

However: Wasn't Maskell's B9 in 1969 observed as being F3/17 by F1R? Did he in fact have two B9s? Both ex Schenken?

I havn’t found this in the F1R Fact Books. In fact I found no “sightings” recorded of B9s in 1969.

This is what I have on B9s. To avoid misinterpretation I have used letters to label the cars:
Car A. Appears Oct 67 driven by Gethin for Sports Motors. What then?

Car B. Sports Motors entry in 68. Appears at Easter Oulton Park driven by Gethin and Autosport calls it “brand new” so presumably NOT car A. Thereafter raced regularly by Schenken. Chassis #3 per Rabagliati. In 1969 Maskell races Ex Schenken car (Autosport 14/3) until he gets a B15 mid-season. Bev Bond appears in a Maskell B9 at end Sept 69 so would seem to have been kept as a spare to the B15.

Car C. Frank Lythgoe/David Berry. Appears at Easter Oulton Park Autosport calls it “new”. No appearances after 2 June.

Car D. Second Lythgoe car entered for Digby Martland. Dna at Oulton but both cars on grid at Silverstone 27/4. Gethin drives this car 31/5. No appearances after 2/6.

Car E. Red Rose / Chris Williams. Appears Barcelona end March “hastily finished “. Driven by Gethin at Brands Aug Monday. Identified as # 5 twice in sightings in F1R Fact Book.

Car F. Red Rose /Rollinson. Also appears Barcelona. Identified as # 6 end June in F1R Fact Book. 1969 Barrie Smith/Avalon Racing per Autosport 25/4 and Rabagliati.

Car G. John Ralph. Appears at Easter and raced throughout year.

Car H. H Heery. Appears Easter and raced throughout year. Sold to Harry Stiller for 20/10 Brands (Autosport report). For sale by F Williams Autosport 25/10 “has lapped Brands with H Stiller 1’38.2” then to S Saye who appears at Brands end Nov and races car in 1969. Chassis #12 per Rabagliati.

Car I. The B9B. When did this race in 68 (see below)?. In 1969 there are some mainly F Libre races for Arthur Moore.

An entry is listed at Castle Combe Easter for H McLaughlin but Fact Book says dna and there are no further entries so I assume this was a cancelled order.
NOTE this means that 4 cars can be “ex Gethin”.

In the earlier post the B9B is attributed to Sports Motors, Berry and Rollinson. What races do we think this car actually appeared in? At Brands 2/9 Autosport says Rollinson was in “latst F3 Chevron with much stiffer chassis”

car A, October 67, was the B7

Car B, Sports Motors B9/04 see Chris Townsend post, and Chevron records

Car C, Frank Lythgoe, Dave Berry B9/09

Car D, Frank Lythgoe, Digby Martland B9/10?? Dave Berry says Digby didn't enjoy single seaters so that might explain its rare appearences

Car E, Red Rose, Chris Williams, B9/05

Car F, Red Rose, Alan Rollinson, B9/06

Car G, John Ralph, B9/07

Car H, Howard Heerey, B9/16?

Car I, sole B9B built, Peter Gethin, first race and first win, Brands Sept 2nd 1968

as I understand it!!

Silly me - I should have remembered the B7! But, the earlier post said there were 8 B9 plus 1 B9B so your list leaves one unaccounted for.

At Brands 2/9 Gethin stood in for Chris Williams who was ill. It certainly would be logical that he had the B9B and won with it even though the Autosport report I quoted implies it was Rollinson. In fact this is confirmed by the Autosport report two weeks later of Zolder where it says "Wiliams having the 68/69 development car driven by Gethin at Brands"

chevron B9

Slight delay to last posting! Old age and distractions. The missing B9; There are a couple of entries for H Mclaughlin which were not taken up, presumably a cancelled order. Could this be chassis B9/17 'ex Sports Motors, Barrie Maskell 1969'. Tim Schenken doesn't re-call a change of chassis during 1968 and 04 would appear to be the regular car. Or is that too simple?
B9/f3/4 Sports Motors Gethin/Schenken
B9/f3/5 Red Rose Motors Chris Williams
B9/f3/6 Red Rose Motors Alan Rollinson
B9/f3/7 John Ralph
B9/f3/9 Dave Berry Frank Lythgoe Racing
B9/f3/10 Digby Martland Frank Lythgoe Racing
B9/f3/16 Howard Heerey
B9/f3/17 Ordered H Mclaughlin (not taken up) Sports Motors Spare?

Further cry for help!! Driftwood has mentioned three cars in Japan, is there any chance of your contact attempting to obtain chassis numbers? for convenience! these were stamped under the chassis on one of the cross members under the oil tank, and the rear seat cross member. Any help would be appreciated.
