Spiteful should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
lola b05/40

RML's new lola took its first steps a little while ago
http://www.mulsannescorner.com/news.html
and it seems the rear end of the car deviates quite a lot from the wind tunnel model lola released october 2004.
http://www.mulsannescorner.com/newsoct04.html
The tail's a lot shorter (there seems to be an ad-on longtail on the october model) and a whole lot higher too.
Has this got something to do with rules compliance or is it really a better solution or am I the only one who really cares about that sort of stuff?

Greetings Spiteful! You would be in the running for the day's observer award!

In looking at a shot of the rear of the Binnie Lola (on Daily Sports Car) as it was being readied to leave the Lola factory, the rear deck at the rear end does seem to be much higher then the wind tunnel model, and I do not see the bulges to clear rear suspension that exist on the wind tunnel model. As to what all that means, I do not know. I wonder if the long tail is a Le Mans tail? I wonder if the Binnie car needs higher rear deck due to engine choice? Maybe Mulsanne Mike can comment.

there are usually differences such as this between an initial wind-tunnel model and the actual chassis... in this case the pics that were released by lola of the wind tunnel model were far from what they came to as the final solution for the car's aero work

true, a lot of differences
I guess that stunningly low rear deck would be a bit of a thight fit...

thats true, and they had to make the rear body-work flexible enough to accomodate a whole host of different engine options... this would be my guess as to the main reason for the difference between the 2 examples.

This will be an obvious difference to look for on the Intersport and Binie Lolas at Sebring....

I'll be there, as will others...let's see how different the two rear decks are on those two cars, since Intersport will have an AER motor and Binnie has the Nicholson-McLaren...

The more I thought about this, the more I doubt the tail section varies by engine. It would make the project too big, with too much design time, for it to be worthwhile. I imagine all the engines stuff under the cowling pretty well. I am guessing the variations spotted were evolutionairy from time in the wind tunnel, or the model picured has a long Le Mans type tail for testing that we may see fitted to the cars that will go to Le Mans, the ones we have seen out testing having the normal tails.

All just a hunch.

i have seen pics of the Chamberlain-Berridge Lola, and it looks identical to the other 2., except for the intake, which looks like the B160 AER intake.

hopefully i will be able to show the pics soon, or someone else will. not sure yet..

Reading the interview with Binnie on DSC he said the new Lola LMP2 car has better aero figures than the 'MG' Lola LMP1 car. The car will also be competitive horsepower wise against further restricted 'LMP900s'

This being the case do you think the new Lola will be able to outpace the restricted 'LMP900s'.

considering what the Miracle Lola did at the Sebring Winter Test on first-gen Kumho tires i don't think its outside the realm of possibility...

however, i dont think that the aero figures are better for the B05/40 than the B01/60 outright, i think that what they were saying is that the aero figures are better than they had first thought they would be in that the new regs such as the shorter chord rear wing, shorter rear and front overhangs, etc. did not have as bad an effect as they thought they would be

I've got some photos from the Snetterton test, but I can't show them yet, as Lola asked me to take some for them. I'd better ask their permission before I put them online for anyone to see...

Mulsanne Mike wrote a nice technical description of the new Lola B05/40: http://www.mulsannescorner.com/LolaB0540.html Spendid work.

He will have a lot of work updating his website for the numerous "new" cars (all the hybride versions)
