In the UK the Opel (Vauxhall) Mokka is almost exclusively purchased by elderly people. They find the high seats much easier for entry/exit purposes. The same goes for many vehicles of the SUV/Minivan (MPV) style.

Not what the maker intended, but they don't care if sales are steady. Thanks be to Motabilty schemes and the Disability Living Allowance.

that Toyota C-hr looks terrible. like some sort of mutant cross between a pontiac aztec and a nissan juke.

and that opel sort of looks like an older model (2012-2015) honda cr-v...which is not a bad thing. basic car and very good for what it is.

my dad has a 2012 cr-v and his main compliment is actually about the getting in and out of it. not a bad car to drive though to be honest.

so the opel is the winner of this lot (not really doing comparisons though are we?).

We get the Opel/Vauxhall here in North America as the Chevrolet Trax.

Did you ever play the "punch buggy" game as a kid, where you would punch somebody in the car when you saw an old vw beetle? Well I revived that game about 5 years ago, but with Aztec's. So whenever I see an Aztec on the road i punch my passenger. Normally this wouldn't happen that often, but I spent 2 years in Lansing Michigan (where the Aztecs were made) and they are quite numerous.

Gladly the Aztec was never sold in Europe.
But we had the FIAT Multipla.

If you consider the proposed height of the Alfa, that must be the biggest Alfa badge in history. It'll be interesting to see if it looks as good when it's actually built.

1,650 mm. About the same as the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace.

Where did the name SUV or Sports Utility Vehicle come from to describe a slightly raised hatch back or estate car?

To me an SUV, if I had never seen one could be a Holden or Ford ute so popular in Australia with a V8 under the hood and tyres bigger that found on F1 car, or a VW caddy with the under pinnings of a Golf GTi or a slightly detuned Transit Supervan. In other words a utility vehicle that was quicker than your average van or pick up that could still be used to carry goods or used for services.

Instead we get a raised hatch back to carry passengers.

I guess originally it seemed to refer to utility vehicles (so LandRovers or similar in the UK) that were being used in a non-utility role.
So when the interior of 4x4s become more designed for family use they became SUVs.
Over time, the market has led to more and more car based platforms rather than truck based - and the need for the 'utility' side of the name has disappeared almost entirely. It has also led to compact (or crossover) SUVs, which by the nature of car manufacturer will use the platform of a smaller car.

A look through the history of Mercedes' M>GL development tracks quite well the SUV market move from body-on-frame trucks into unibody, upsized cars.

It has almost the same size as the Mokka. It seems to me like a disguised mini MPV.

It's ok to me.

The Eclipse Sport is absolutely horrible. Mitsubishi designers can't do any proper thing since the Evo X.
