Sad news from the Isle of Man

Not strictly motor-racing, but marshal related.

A marshal has been killed in an accident at the Isle of Man TT

The organisers of the Isle of Man TT Races, the Manx Motor Cycle Club Limited, regret to announce that a competitor was fatally injured in an incident during today’s Senior TT. A race marshal also died in the same incident.

It happened on the second lap of the race at Kirk Michael. The rider who died was newcomer Gus (Ian) Scott from Kendal in Cumbria, a motor cycle journalist and road tester who had been entered in every solo event this week Mr. Scott (40) was a single man with a ten year old daughter.

The marshal who died was named as Mrs April Bolster from Kirk Michael. The Coroner of Inquests has been informed and investigations are continuing into the circumstances.

A tragic incident. My thoughts are with them and their families.

A Marshal and a competitor are still that Marshal and competitor no matter what their motorsport is.

there's something about the TT - people get hurt and killed every year but still people insist on racing there. If it was a permanent track, i'm sure they'd be more outcry than there seems to be. I think they are the 2nd and 3rd fatalities this year as i seem to remember reading that a sidecar racer died earlier in the week. My thoughts are with the families of all involved...

....it's late. Apologies, it was a guy from Sweeden on a Suzuki that died in practice. This quote comes from the IoM news, but i'm not sure how accurate it is. If true, it reminds me of the marshal that died in an F1 race many years ago...

It is believed the marshal, Mrs April Bolster of Kirk Michael, was crossing the road to attend to another rider when Scott collided with her.

Tragic news indeed but it does beg the question of how much training or experience the IOM Bike Marshals have. Are they local people who come out to help once a year (The lady lives where the accident happened) and through better training could this have been avoided. Lets hope lessons can be learnt from this very sad accident.

However, it is very sad news and my thoughts and sympathy is with her family.

Terrible news for all involved

Stephen as far as I know about half the marshals of which approx 1200 in total are from the IOFM the rest are from around the world
There was a piece in this weeks Motorcycle News about it and saying they need more marshals for next year
Although some training is given not sure at what level that is, perhaps someone else on the forum will know

Anyway my thoughts and sympathies to all involved

The answer to how much training they get is, sadly, not much. I've done a few "3 Hills Challenge" hill climbs which used to precede the TT by a week or so. We had "help" from locals who did the TT. They seemed to think just doing the TT was training enough. They may have a point, but we stopped the hill climbs. One of the reasons was resistance to our methods. This was a motorsport hill climb, which was manned by members of the BMRMC as was, and our Clerk was Peter Roberts.
It's very much a fact of life that the TT course can't be manned as well as a normal circuit, IE both sides of the road covered, so maybe, this was just a tragic accident.
Havibg been round the TT course in a car and coach, I'm convinced it's an event which should be confined to the history books. You can take rights of people to race there just too far, as, at least 3 families will agree this week.

I have to disagree with you Stoowert. So long as everyone knows the risks, and everything practical is done to minimise them, people shouldn't be forbidden from taking part in a sporting activity. We are becoming a nanny state where all risks have to be eradicated.

Back onto thread, I'd like to add my condolences to those already posted.
