but you can use a hd settop box on any tv that you can watch a dvd on

Actually he is right. I have no idea on the numbers but we only get the ABC and SBS in HD, regardless of what we spend - it is simply not broadcast in this region. No 7HD and no OneHD.
May happen when the analogue signal is switched off in a month, but probably wont happen till next year.
I am not that far away from a capital city either.

I'm aware of how it works, I was interested in your maths statistic. So it's just a sweeping generalism you plucked out of mid air.

TVs have never been cheaper than they are now. Digital TV will soon be the only broadcast medium in Australia. Ch 7 are treating motorspport viewers with contempt, this is just one example.

When Formula 1 don't even do their races in HD (until next year), then there's no way that V8's could surely expect the same. In any case there's still limited HD equipment in the country to cover sporting events. I know that many AFL fans weren't happy that the GF Replay wasn't in HD because the cameras and equipment were either in Delhi for the Comm Games or in Sydney for the NRL.

And whilst Channel 7 have the rights......

Well, interesting developments in anti siphoning laws may open the door to HD broadcasting to V8SC, seems that 70% of Australian house holds have access to it.
