The 10-Tenths Top 10!
Motivated by the other thread currently hot on everyone's lips about the Top 10 ATCC drivers in history, and how everyone thinks there are some odd calls, let's see if us internet experts can do it any better.
Post your Top 10 drivers in ATCC/V8SC history into this thread, then after we get a decent amount of responses I will compile the lists together to see who comes out on #1. Obviously for this to work you need to set prejudices aside for a moment and objectively select who you believe are the 10 best drivers this country's premier racing category has ever seen. This is purely for a bit of fun, so let's see if it can stay that way. I'll start us off:

Are we sticking solely to ATCC/V8SCS races, or incorporating Bathurst, Endurance championships etc... like the 'official' list did?

Once you get past Brock at the top, which I think no one would argue with, it's not easy.
I'm not sure if the Ambrose, Whincup, Skaife and so on have done enough just yet. Was good to see most of the living legends lined up in Pit Lane yesterday for thier parade as we just don't recognise our "stars" that well in Australia. I was at Avalon earlier this year where Sir Jack Brabham was the guest of honour at the Australian Speedcar Title and to see the almost god like respect everyone treated Sir Jack was my highlight of the 2009-10 speedway season. Remembering Sir Jack started in Midgets (early speedcars) and went all the way to the top in motorsport. |

Surely Jack Brabham would have to be #1.

I believe Jim Richards would have to be in the top three for two reasons, (1) he can peddle any marque fast (BMW, Volvo, Holden, Nissan...) and (2) he's a legend in the wet, well aside from Bathurst in 92 but we won't go there

I like what I am reading here. Me personally I would swap 2 and 3. The biggest problem is the red and blue glasses cloud peoples judgement. But I think Jim is the man. And eight of the 10 have driven Fords and Holdens in Main game races.

Black Jack did some TC racing in Australia in 76,77,78. In 77 he was as quick and some times quicker than John Goss in the other team car. And he was able to get some speed out of a privateer Torana in 78 also. He was quick enough don't worry about that. And don't forget by 1978 the man was 52 years old.

Like the list, but would put Bob Morris in at 9 or 10 at the expense of John Bowe

You then face the issue of age; being only 31, there are a number that I never had the opportunity to see, like Pete Geoghegan, Bob Morris, Allan Moffat (in his hey day). I could include these guys, but merely from the point of view of records; not having seen their racecraft.
My list (from 1984 onwards) would be: 1. Peter Brock (but I am biased) 2. Jim Richards 3. Mark Skaife 4. Craig Lowndes 5. Larry Perkins 6. Dick Johnson 7. Glen Seton 8. John Bowe 9. Jamie Whincup 0. Russell Ingall |

Skaife is, on every measurable, number 2.
5 touring car titles 6 Bathursts and counting. In all bar 2 of those he was the lead driver. Record number of race wins, lap records etc. You can talk about superior equipment etc, but even even Godzilla was not markedly more superior than some of Brock's cars. And when he had superior gear - he won. When he didn't - he was still competitive (to a point) and he extracted so much out of some ordinary machinery during the post-Winfield years. He was also, without question, the best closer at Bathurst during the early 2000s. I love JR - he's a brilliant driver and an amazing guy. But of his seven wins, he was lead driver twice (in the GT-R) and co-driver with Brock three times, Skaife once and Rydell once. But he was out-paced by Skaife for all bar 2-3 years of his time there. Touring car wise, Brock & Skaife are the two most successful of all time and I said in the other thread - they were the only two absolutes. After them, you can make a case for 20 drivers to be in position 3 onwards. |

I have a problem with drivers that have outstanding records but only when driving for factory teams and then failed when they went elsewhere.
JR is hard to beat for #1. Moffat made his name with the Coca-Cola Mustang that he prepared and ran privately. Ian Geoghan was natural and was faster than Moffat at Bathurst in Moffat's own car. Johnson made his name in the XD Falcon he built himself, built and drove the fastest Sierras in the world. Ambrose grabbed the SBR Ford by the scruff of the neck, had pole position in his first race and did what no one had done previously or since at SBR. Lowndes and Whincup are naturals. Brock and Skaife obviously are obviously in there but not my #1. Colin Bond.....top TC driver and Aust rally champ as well IIRC. It's a hard list to finalise. |

How did David Oxton get above Denny Hulme and Jason Richards? You're not David Oxton, are you?
