Renault Launch.

Renault launched their new car in Monaco today, the car has already been seen testing so this launch was for the media and their partners.

I'm not sure if we have mentioned this before, but Renault have gone for a V-Keel design this year, the new aero regs making the twin keel less effective.

Bob Bell on the subject:

Technical director Bob Bell said, at the launch of the new car in Monaco on Tuesday, that he was pleased that new cars already launched by rival teams have not featured the V-keel and hoped it would provide benefits both mechanically and aerodynamically.

"It's a good structural advantage, and a good aerodynamic advantage and so for us it is a win-win situation," he said. "It is a good solution and it is a nice touch for this year that's a little bit different."

Looks like an evolution - which seems sensible and the way everyone's going.

I think it was Toyota's Mike Gascoyne who said in the past teams bringing out "radical" designs had spent too much time changing bits which already worked, rather than focussing on the bits that didn't.

Certainly the two most recent radical attempts at a radical car from Williams and McLaren didn't deliver. I'm sure there is an element of 'baby out with the bath water' if you go the extreme.

OT: But I loved MG's phrase at the Toyota launch that most of what we saw on the car would be 'scrap' by Melbourne, pretty expensive scrap though.....!

Constructive comment on the car, there....

Anyway, on the subject of Flavio, this, from Autosport.com

Quote:

Renault boss Flavio Briatore has refused to rule out the possibility he will turn his back on Formula 1 later this season. His contract with the French manufacturer is due to run out in the middle of the 2005 season.

When you think about it, he is a pimp. Just not in the sense of the word we make it out to be.

Well, the white-yellow-dark blue Renault colourscheme on Kovalainen's outfit on the far left in the first shot looks heaps better than the babyblue version IMO!

I'm talking this one!

Nice car too by the way...

but Renault have gone for a V-Keel design this year
Renault had a single keel construction last year as well and iirc they never had a twinkeel.

McLaren (still have), Williams, Jordan and Sauber were the double keel fraction while Sauber alread made the switch back last year, Williams move to twins last year and right back again this year.
McLaren is the only team that still believes in the concept and I think they are wrong, there must be a reason Sauber and Williams switched back and especially for Ferrari never having adopted it. I mean, who's won more in the last couple of years? A single or a twin keel car?

Even McLaren have modified the idea and now have a "nil-keel".
