GP2 Hungaroring - Weekend Thread

Riiiiiiight, so the series visits the notoriously awkward Budapest venue with much to play for.

Nico Hulkenberg is on a roll after two superb drives at home but Romain Grosjean proved with a storming drive through the field in the second race that he is very much up for the fight.

It remains to be seen if Nico and ART generally can match the pace of the Barwa cars consistently with Ocean, DAMS, Fat Burner and Piquet all looking for front running form.

Championship Positions after 9 races:

1 Hulkenberg 46
2 Grosjean 42
3 Petrov 41
4= Di Grassi
Maldonado 26
6 Zuber 20
7 D'Ambrosio 18
8 Valerio 16
9 Filippi 13
10 Villa 12

So far I have found that British Eurosport 2 will be showing Race 1 delayed at 16.45 on Saturday and Sunday's race at 19.00, again delayed.

Lucas Di Grassi has been the form man in free practice and then went and stuck it on pole a few hundreth's ahead of Petrov and..... Javi Villa?!!

The website says something about Grosjean clobbering Perera's car causing a stoppage and wrecking both driver's qualifying sessions on the spot?

Top 10:
Di Grassi, 1:27.867
Petrov, 27.933
Villa, 28.023
Valsecchi 28.151
Hulkenberg 28.297
Filippi 28.379
Maldonado 28.452
Zuber 28.465
Rigon 28.534
Rodriguez 28.536

Dams have had another shocker with Kobayashi down in 21st and D'Ambrosio in 23rd.

So Supernova get their drivers into the top 10, and Grosjean will start in last place.

Not sure he'll be able to do what he did in Germany's second race around the Hungaroring? Be interesting to see how far he can get though!

grosjean tried to get past perera, and grosjean ended in the barrier and perera in the gravel. think that was on autosport.com?

interesting to see petrov up there yet again, he's looking a better bet than grosjean for the title at the moment!

good work by rigon and villa too - and crikey, what did they put in valsecchi's porridge this morning?!

Hulkenberg was invincible today. Di Grassi and Villa completed the podium. At the end, Valsecchi was in a good mood and overtook Filippi and nearly Maldonado! Rigon with his return will start 1st tomorrow. Grosjean, after all, did a very good work to finish 10º today.

Looks like the Hulk may start to run away now. He is definately the class of the field, Grosjean included.

Hold your horses folks, Grosjean's weekend was compromised by the qualy shunt.

Whether he was aided by the first lap shunt or not the guy still finished 10th, having started from the back and once clear of the stubborn Mortara, looked pretty quick and smooth.

The momentum is with Hulkenberg but Martin Haven's comment that he is only one of two drivers to win 3 races in a row in the category's history kind of tells us how difficult it is too wholly dominate the series.

Plenty of racing left in this series yet and tomorrow's race promises plenty of action!!

Race 2 goes to Giedo van der Garde. Di Grassi and Grosjean went head-to-head and the Brazilian won the day. Wonder if Renault were watching.

the sniper has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I haven't seen the second race yet but it sounds like Maldonado had a typically eventful one!

Van der Garde did a 'Villa' Led from the start and managed his lead he was helped over the opening laps by a shunt between the initial 2nd and 3rd placed cars Rigon and Maldonado.

Maldonado effectively ruined any hopes he had left of this title by attempting a completely ridiculous attempt on Rigon in the left right section after the chicance round the back. Result Rigon out and Malodonado getting a drive through.

Hulkenberg made a bit of a hash of his opening lap and fell backwards, he took a couple of people but spent most of the race stuck in 8th, behind initially Clos who went off and promoted Nico up a spot who then was rooted behind Parente.

Now I dunno about anyone else but i'd think twice about putting a move on Alvaro, just for a sniff of a single point, which looks as though that is exactly what Hulkenberg thought! Rather than take any risks he waited I think to see if anyone fell off in front of him (less to lose than Grosjean?).

Grosjean made a brilliant start and quickly zipped upto 6th and then did Parente on lap 2 (or 3)

He then decided to sit behind Di Grassi for the remainder of the race when I would've thought he'd have pusehd like hell as he was obviously quicker and needed as many points as possible.

Overall a race that promised much but didn't deliver. Supernova must be please with 2nd (Filippi) but Villa who was 3rd for a while slipped down to 5th after a small off at 2/3 distance.

1 Van der Garde
2 Filippi
3 Di Grassi
4 Grosjean
5 Villa
6 Parente
7 Hulkenberg

Points after 10 rounds:
Hulkenberg 57
Grosjean 45
Petrov 41
Di Grassi 40
Maldonado 31
Filippi 22
Zuber 20
Villa 20
D'Ambrosio 18
Valerio 16
Van der Garde 13

Petrov and Zuber has poor weekends and didn't add to theior scores.
