10 Best Drivers During the 1980's

Well I had the 'best since 1994' thread - have a go at this one: the best 10 drivers during the 1980s. It's gonna be alot harder then he 90s version, that I'm sure of. I'll post mine later on.

All my choices started races sometime between Buenos Aires, 1980, and Adelaide, 1989.

1. Aryton Senna de Silva
2. Alain Prost
3. Stefan Bellof
4. Gilles Villeneuve
5. Jean Alesi
6. Nigel Mansell
7. Emmerson Fittipaldi
8. Mario Andretti
9. Gerhard Berger
10. Nelson Piquet

This is based on their entire careers, not just during the 1980s.

I like your list Lee, but of course , it is spelled Ayrton! You know, my 18 year old son, who's name is Ayrton, gets it spelled wrongly in the manner you have, more often than any other misspelling! We're actually used to seeing it by now!

That raises a good point, make sure to specify if you're list is based on performances during the 80s, drivers who started in the 80s, or drivers who competed in the 1980s.

Here is my list, featuring drivers based on their performances from 1980-1989:

1. Alain Prost - the ultimate proffesional
2. Ayrton Senna - incredibly fast
3. Gilles Villeneuve - passionate, wild, superlative
4. Nigel Mansell - always tried hard, unlucky not to take an 80s WDC
5. Nelson Piquet - scrapped together three championships
6. Keke Rosberg - still holds record for fastest F1 lap ever
7. Niki Lauda - dud qualifier, but he did win a WDC
8. Gerhard Berger - solid performer, with a few race wins in there
8. Alan Jones - not the fastest, but the gritty Aussie did win a title
10. Michele Alboreto - RIP

Actually, Montoya smoked that record with his pole lap at Monza last year. Sorry...

Oh damn, that's right, of course. I knew one of the 'fastest speed' records had fallen, obviously it's the 'fastest race' that still hasn't been beaten. My mistake.

I'll give a top 10 but this is just in names that come to mind. I will only be looking between their careers 1980-1989:

Ayrton Senna - Dedicated and quick
Alain Prost - The Professor
Nigel Mansell - Mr. Excitement
Nelson Piquet - Always there
Rene Arnoux - Ended in a whimper, but he was talented
Jacques Laffite - Mr. Nice Guy
Gilles Villeneuve - If only...
Keke Rosberg - Supremely quick
Michele Alboreto - Incredibly loyal and deserved more
Gerhard Berger - The Joker

Based on their performances in the 1980s. Hmmm.

1. Alain Prost
2. Gilles Villeneuve
3. Ayrton Senna (da Silva, if you insist)
4. Nelson Piquet
5. Stefan Bellof
6. Carlos Reutemann
7. Keke Rosberg
8. Nigel Mansell
9. Niki Lauda
10. Alan Jones

Though there were days - so few! so few! - when Reutemann was more than a match for anyone on the grid.

You're right, this is harder. Lets see. In no particular order:

Alain Prost
Ayrton Senna
Nigel Mansell
Gilles Villeneuve
Alan Jones
Nelson Piquet
Keke Rosberg
Gerhard Berger
Niki Lauda
John Watson - Debatable I know - put him on because of his 'burn from the stern' (Clive James description!) drives in '82 and '83, though admit that he didn't perform often enough.

Honourable Mentions:
Michele Alboreto (R.I.P.)
Stefan Bellof (would definitely be on the list in terms of talent, but don't feel he did enough GPs before his tragic accident to warrant being on the main list)
Rene Arnoux
Riccardo Patrese
Carlos Reutemann (just needed to have more 'on' days)

1. Gilles Villeneuve - an inspiration, above stats and numbers.
2. Ayrton Senna - Quickest of 'em all, but couldn't see a car ahead
3. Alain Prost - The thinker, best at setting up a car
4. Nelson Piquet - Smarter than it seemed, and talented
5. Niki Lauda - Just like Prost, but maybe a tad slower
6. Carlos Reutemann - The best, but so moody...
7. Nigel Mansell - Very quick, but seemed to lack something in respect to Senna and Prost
8. Gerhard Berger - champion without crown
9. Keke Rosberg - very fast, and a champion
10. Jacques Laffite - had a pretty good career

Yep it's very hard after 3rd or 4th place.

Senna- serene ferocity
Prost=Mansell- two ways to skin a cat- both effective though.
Gilles- poetry in motion
Lauda- thinker
Rosberg- style, some guile
Piquet- South American version of bits of Prost
Berger- excellent driver, all-rounder
Patrese- same as above
Jones- tough
de Angelis- nice guy, "smooth" driver

The Moon Monkey should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Other than the usual contenders, Prost, Senna, Piquet, Mansell etc, I would include an honourable mention to Derek Warwick who was considered to be more likely to win races than Mansell in their early F1 careers. Put it another way, Jenson Button is in his 4th season of formula 1 and despite all the hype surrounding him and driving for quite decent teams, has yet to finish on the podium. By Derek's 4th season in F1 (1984 - Renault)he had finished in 2nd place twice...
