Adam Petty was killed today in a practice crash at Loudon. NASCAR is as safe as motorsports come but no motorsport is completely safe. Drivers who were driving behind Adam just before his crash believe that his throttle stuck wide open. Loudon is not a high speed track, top speeds run about 150mph in the corners. What a shame as Adam was a very good person who no doubt would have carried the Petty name into the new millennium with the same class and greatness as his great-grandfather Lee, grandfather Richard and his dad Kyle.

God bless the Petty family. It has been an extremely tough year for them.

I am so, so sorry to hear this.

One gets lulled into a false sense of security with NASCAR. Time and again, drivers come back from the most hideous of incidents, and when something like this happens, it just seems unreal.

Poor Adam. He was a young man with an obvious talent. Even given the limited coverage in the UK, he was starting to get seriously noticed.

Joe, as you say, it has been a ghastly year for the Petty family. I for one will be remembering them tonight.

This is awful.

The Petty's have given us some amazing racing down the generations, but none of it is worth the the loss of life. The fact that the guy was only 19 is a real shame - such a short life, with so much to give.

RIP Adam Petty. Our thoughts are with your family and friends.

I am very sorry to hear of this. I just saw some pictures from the crash and what is even more estonishing is that the driver's side of the car appears almost completely undamaged. It is something that I am sure will have to be looked into.

I just want to extend my sympathy and empathy to his family and fans. Adam Petty represented the long standing Petty tradition in NASCAR, and with the death of Lee Petty earlier in the year these are very trying times for the family. But, they are obvously a hearty bunch so I am sure they'll pull through.

RIP Adam Petty.

Read eulogies and touching memories from the people who new Adam well, fellow NASCAR drivers and their team owners.

Friends closer to NASCAR than myself have been saying for a year that Adam will exceed the acomplishments of his father and approach the level of Richard.

I'm sorry we'll never know.
