I spent a lot of time near or above Taurus pits, saw the diesel one (#4) under my eyes collapse two or three times, and never heard a sound... the other one (#10, Judd engine) was great as usual (=Olive Garden 2000 Lola). Check : Tb, I assume you're mentionning the #10 sound, the Judd one... Last edited by Fab; 9 Mar 2005 at 13:39. |

Hope to see the team out in some LMES races this season and get the backing they deserve. |

The big issue seems to be (according to one of our engineer's who works on diesel truck engines for a living) is that as you increase the power of the diesel engine you get an increase in torque, which is good in principle, but getting the driver train to deal with the torque is the real challenge. Not getting the power out of the engine.

I am still very sceptical about the statement, "we have resolved the black smoke problem". I wouldn't thought that was possible at all because all diesel powered cars smoke when pushed.

I remember the diesel powered Offshore Power Boats used to sound pretty impressive. (When the UIM allowed it). Maritimo still run one down here in Oz and even with a weight penalty it is still awesome.
Although they had the worst case of turbo lag this side of a freight train! I think if Audi were to get serious about it the results would come. Doesn't that Lola just have a CAT V8 in it? |

Having watched some truck racing last year, the front running teams (with the newer trucks) seemed to be able to make power without, much, smoke whereas the smaller teams who'd obviously just crudely turned up the boost and fuelling were smoking like a beagle. |

There's an interesting little rumour kicking around the Infoscourse forum today. Apparently RS magazine has an article celebrating Porsches imminent return to Le Mans, with a V8 diesel.

Is it in Porsche's interest to run a diesel though? I'd have thought if they wanted to go that route they would just put an oil burner in a 911 varient but who knows.

Something odd too : on the ACO letter I got yesterday, they seem to insist on the "ecological" side of racing (less noise, less smoke, low gazoline consumption, etc...).
I don't know for you, but I don't like it. Racing is racing, as long as it's on circuits... |

porsche´s got no diesel engines, no it makes no sense to them to race one. It would be logical for VW, audi or something similar

Personally, I'd love to see a three-marque dog fight for diesel honours at Le Mans! |

Although Lamborghini has it's roots set firmly in the farmyard and Porsche's roots are equally unlikely, today they are both specialist exotic sportscar manufacturers. These marques sit alongside the likes of Aston Martin and Ferrari amongst others. They all make sexy and highly desirable toys for those who can afford them. Diesel is not sexy! If Porsche want to put a diesel in their Cayenne that's fine by me, but they should demonstrate the capabilities of the diesel on the Paris Dakar and Rally Raid events. In contrast, I really do hope Audi pursue the diesel option in 2006. The link to the performance diesel engines they are introducing to their model range is far less tenuous. Because, like BMW and Honda, they are selling sensible cars to the masses. |

A BMW 330D is pretty sexy, for a saloon car, and drives much better than the 330 petrol version.
Can't see a high performance diesal engine sounding any worse than the V6 turbo fitted to the XJ220! |
