1987 JAF All Japan Touring Car Championship - Results and discussion

1987 JAF All Japan Touring Car Championship

The third year of the AJTCC for group A touring cars. Six rounds scheduled divided into the usual three divisions with Ford Sierra driver Naoki Nagasaka winning the title.

Schedule:
Race Date Course Name of race
Round 1 1987-03-22 Nishi Nippon Japan Touring Car Championship Series Race 1 87
Round 2 1987-06-21 Nishi Sendai Highland Games 300 Km Race
Round 3 1987-08-30 Tsukuba Circuit 87 Tsubuka Race de Nippon
Round 4 1987-09-20 Sportsland-Sugo 87 Sugo 300 Km Group A Championship Race
Round 5 1987-11-15 Fuji Speedway 87 Intertec World Touring Car Championship Race
Round 6 1987-12-05 Suzuka 87 F3000 · F3 · Gr A Series last round in Suzuka Super Final Round

Note that round 5 at Fuji also doubled as the 11th and final round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship. Also worth mentioning is the fact that round three was held in late August, giving late comers plenty of time to make an impact on the series - Toyota and Nissan seems to have benefitted from the scheduling. This is the calender as it was raced, but don't know if any of these dates were re-scheduled from earlier dates, as weather have altered such things both before and after.

Points distribution:
Position Overall Division
1 9 20
2 6 15
3 4 12
4 3 10
5 2 8
6 1 6
7 0 4
8 0 3
9 0 2
10 0 1

Best four scores to count.

Divisions:
Division cc
1 1001-1600 cc
2 1601-2500 cc
3 Over 2500 cc

Autosport reported from a few late season races - especially the Fuji one - and several clips from various races can be found on YouTube, but more of the individual races later. Next will be a list of drivers that has been mentioned in the JAF results pages in either qualifying or race results.

Translated names from Japanese to Latin letters seem to progress slowly but moving. Not so with the identity of the teams behind, which still seems to consist of a lot of sponsor brand names.

Thanks for starting this one Jesper!

Just a couple of initial thoughts, random if anything.

I recall that the European and some of the Aussie teams did the WTCC Fuji round, was this also part of the Asia-Pacific mini series.

One name stuck out for me: Dave Scott. I'm pretty sure that's the same Dave Scott who was a front runner in British F3 in the early 80's and then had a couple of belated attempts at F2. He made a return to the F3 series in 1985, and was still competitive, having missed a few seasons through either personal or budgetary issues?

Probably falls under the lost talents bracket!

I don't recall him doing Japanese Touring cars though!! What was he in?

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Scott raced the Autotech BMW 635CSi at the Fuji Intertec WTCC race in November. By then the team had an M3, so this car was likely a second string entry.

I think to remember the name of Dave Scott popping up on the Japanese scene in the late 1980s - single seaters being his main line of racing, but also included group C and touring cars if I remember correctly.

Yes, as I remember he did a fair bit of Group C in Japan- he was one of Nissan's factory drivers at one point

I have no race report, but from Autosport there's a short article about the Mercedes seen in the video (ex-Snobeck car), starting from 18th but leading division 2 when the engine went on lap 12.
The Hasemi Nissan seemed to be well in control but retired as did the brand new Trampio Ford Sierra, which likely had engine related problems. This left victory to the factory Mitsubishi almost a minute ahead of the Mugen Honda.
The ex-TWR Rover had two pitstops - don't know about the rest of the pack, but probably one for most.
Note that the track runs anti clockwise.
From the Bridgestone file the weather is descriped as overcast and partly rainy, but doesn't show so in the video.
From what I understand division 2 and 3 was combined caused by a lack of competitors.

The thing that strikes me most of all about this series was the performance of the small class cars....

We've briefly touched on this before in things like the Corolla threads, but the Japanese spec GrpA 1600cc cars were significantly more developed than those that ran in Europe and Australia.

Many of them were works or quasi works effrorts i'm sure, so they would have received a lot of attention finaicially and performance wise, but to be that quick against big class 635's and the Rover (even if those 2 big cars were in the hands of drivers who were perhaps less capable or familiar with the cars than some regular Group A greats) was something else!

IIRC it was something that was commented on fairly often in Autosport's reports of the Japanese Group A scene almost from the start- IIRC there may have been at least one outright win by a 1600cc car early on, albeit against limited 'big' class opposition. I think Chris Hodgetts remarked on it in one of the 1987 Fuji WTCC race reports- as I remember he suggested the local Corollas were running development parts he'd never even seen before, much less been able to use on his own cars...

Looking at a couple of the various video clips, a couple of questions come to mind about the 'European' cars seen on the Japanese scene. We know about the Rover, but what was the origin of some of the others?

The Trampio Sierra Cosworth- I've got a vague memory this was a Rouse kit? Think it's the car Andy drove in the WTCC round at the end of the year.

Secondly, there was a Volvo. IIRC at least one Soderqvist car made the trip for the WTCC round, in Nordica colours, but there seems to have been a 'regular' Japanese Volvo earlier in the season as well. A car leased from Europe, or a Japanese team running one?

The Merc 190, I think Jesper has already identified as an ex-Snobeck car

and finally, the yellow Autotech 635. IIRC there had been at least one 635 in the Japanese series since it adopted Group A

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I'm sure the Auto Tech 635 was the AutoBeaurex car of the previous two seasons - same team, new name for 1987. I can't remember if this had a European past as a Hartge car or that it's 1985 paint scheme accidently looked so.
A single Volvo appeared for round 3, but this was late August at a time when the Swedish series had already ended. I have to have a look at Björn Ohlssons page to see if he has any information regarding this entry.
Of the Trampio Sierra I can only say it has "the look" of a Rouse kit and think I have seen it running an Andy Rouse Engineering sticker on the front bumber - but perhaps this was from 1988.

It seems the track is part of an amusement park.

I'm not sure if this is the lay-out used for this race, as it's 200 meters longer than what the JAF and Bridgestone site mentions. But it does give a sence of a very slow circuit! Another anti-clockwise circuit.
The erea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sendai
Just realising this was the area hit by a devastating Tsunami earlier this year.
Situated just about a 1,000 kilometers away and at opposite ends of the Nation in Nishi Nippon, where round one was held.

Pole set by Aguri Suzuki in the #50 Hasemi Skyline, starting from pole a second time this season. The average speed was just below 106 km/h suggesting it was wet, which might also explain why the pesky #16 Honda qualified 3rd. No fastest lap given.
I'm guessing that for some reason cars #51 and #83 has been counted among the starters, having been qualified, but somehow didn't start or retired on the warm-up lap or lap 1.
39 entries is suggested, but 37 turning up?

I have no race report or video links for this race, so anything in this department will be much appreciated.

The result left Nakaya and Takahashi as championship leaders with two maximum scores from two races - 58 points. Who ever of the two actually leading would be dependant on who had actually raced the most miles! Third, on 50 points, was the Honda duo of Nakako and Okada with Yanagida in the Auto Tech 635 a distant fifth at 27 points.
