if drivers from the 2009 Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda dont compete in the unified IndyCar Series, i hope the drivers find a home within IMSA and the American Le Mans Series. I'm excited about the sale of the Atlantics and the return of Cooper Tires and Mazda as sponsors for 2009.

will 2009 have a repeat with 8 different winners?

John Edwards is testing in Sebring (yesterday and today) with Newman Wachs. I know that he has a friendship with Nick Harvey after Nick was his engineer in winter testing for Forsythe year before last, and Harvey has signed on with Newman Wachs for 2009. Edwards might go to Newman Wachs ????

Will it be easier to find sponsors now that Atlantics has a better future than in past years?

JOHN EDWARDS JOINS NWR FOR 2009 ATLANTIC SEASON
Mundelein, IL (December 11, 2008) – Newman Wachs Racing (NWR) is excited to announce that the 2008 Star Mazda Champion, John Edwards, will be joining the team for the 2009 Atlantic Championship and will drive the #36 MAZDASPEED/ Nuclear Clean Air Energy/ Entergy Nuclear Swift 016.
Mazda joined the Atlantic Series as a sponsor and engine supplier in 2006 and has identified the Atlantic Championship as the top rung on its MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Ladder. As part of the program, Mazda ensures that the Star Mazda Champion receives a ride in the following season’s Atlantic Championship, which will again be the case this year with John Edwards.
Edwards claimed four victories and four pole positions on his way to capturing the 2008 Star Mazda Championship, and brings with him to the Atlantic Championship experience with the current car and knowledge of many of the courses on the 2009 schedule. Edwards drove in the Atlantic Series in 2007 with Red Bull/ Forsythe Racing, and has one podium at Toronto and one additional top-five at Long Beach to his name coming into the 2009 season. Edwards worked with engineer, Nick Harvey, in 2007, and will be re-united with him as he was just named engineer of the #36 machine last week.
Eddie Wachs, Team Owner:
“I am thrilled that John has decided to join us for next year and it is our intention to vie for the Championship. With his experience with these cars, and his relationship with Nick (Harvey), I think they will be a force to reckon with. We are also pleased to have the support of Mazda and proud to carry their banner this season.”
Jim Jordan, Alternative Marketing Manager, Mazda North American Operations:
“We’re thrilled for both the Newman Wachs team and for John Edwards. We’ve known John for several years now and he has impressed us with his on-track skills and his off-track professionalism. It’s easy to forget that he’s only 17 – his maturity is well beyond that of a typical teenager. We expect him to have a great season in the Cooper Tires Atlantic Championship with our Mazda power.”
Newman Wachs Racing heads into its fourth year of competition in the Atlantic Series and will debut their new line-up at the season opener in Savannah, GA next March.

Genoa Racing recently tested Henri Karjalainen in their Atlantic car at Sebring International Raceway. Might be a good move for Henri if he decides to race in North America again for 2009.

It is quite common for a lot of teams to screw the driver over regarding the prize money. I'm glad Markus is putting up a fight. I'd sue their pants off. If the contract passage is in fact correct then no question Brooks needs to pay up.

For me as a driver if I fund a ride, then all the prize money and trophies are mine. If I fund 80% of the proven cost, then I get 80%. If someone hires me and has funded the team then of course I'll accept a lower percentage. I wouldn't do it any other way.

this is huge... $2M to go ANYWHERE !

the 2009 Atlantic Champion bonus will returm with the series champion being presented with a check for $2 million at the conclusion of the season. Unlike the previous champion's bonus, this is prize may be used by the driver to help fund his 2010 campaign in any race series worldwide.

That is possibly the best championship prize I have ever seen. The entries should be flooding in. So who is confirmed etc?

correct....add Niemela to the list of confirmed drivers. Newman Wachs has a real solid team for 2009.

There are a lot of talented drivers still out there ...negotiating contracts.

That Atlantic Championship just completed it's first official test at Palm Beach International Raceway. Twelve drivers took part in the test, but one seemed to stand out... Borja Garcia of Valencia, Spain.

Lap-times and test notes can be found here.

The excitement for this series is really building, look for some more driver commitments shortly.

**update** Borja Garcia has officially signed with Condor Motorsports.

To be honest, I haven't heard anymore about this and I haven't asked...

As you know...Markus Niemela is back in the Atlantic Championship for 2009 with Newman-Wachs Racing, but Brooks Associates Racing failed to show for the first official test. Which doesn't really mean anything at this point...
