The spam/phishing phone calls started again yesterday and this morning. This time it's "BT", with an automated message telling me that they have been trying to contact me, and that my phone line and broadband are going to be disconnected today! Only problem there is that I haven't been with BT for over 30 years, so who's fooling who?

And again, it's all different numbers calling!

No 2 son, who restores furniture is appearing in a TV show called Mend it for Money on Channel 4 at 5pm everyday. The episodes that Sam will be appearing on will be shown on Tuesday 9th, Friday 12th, Tuesday 16th, Tuesday 23rd and Friday 26th.

Restorers compete with each other to restore and sell a range of items. Sam was approached by the producers last year & asked to appear. He has quite a story, having beaten cancer three times, so it’s particularly heart warming to me.

Check it out if you’re near a tv, which you should be as we’re still not allowed out.

I remember Martin Brundle getting in trouble for using the word in an F1 broadcast many moons ago (late 2000's).... the Canadian GP one year was suspended or delayed start because of track breakup problems that had been apparent all weekend, despite ongoing repairs. He made some comment along the lines are the organisers had roped in a bunch of Pikeys to fix it ..... Ended up with ITV or whoever having to make public apologies for Brundles words.

Yes that was 2008 when the track was breaking up and needed last minute repairs. Ofcom did reprimand him for that.

All sorts of things one cannot do or say these days.

https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/n...hillin-4972880

So plane spotters, sitting in a car watching plane movements, may be a slightly weird passtime in the middle of winter but, even in a pandemic, it doesn't sound like the most heinous of crimes.

Especially if one considers that the group of "activitists" who cause damage and disruption at Stansted a year or so back when they prevented the deportation of some criminals whose presence in the country could never be considered good for public safety, recently had their convictions "quashed".

There are times when legal logic proves completely baffling. (If considered logically.)

No, some of those incidents are hardly the crimes of the century. However, the rules are fairly clear; only leave home for essential journeys or to drive to exercise in the nearby locality. I would hardly classify, for example, going out to watch planes as being essential.

As to the law, or it's interpretation sometimes, being an ass, it is usually not the judiciary that should be pilloried; it is our jackass politicians who create bad legislation, or at least really very poorly crafted and drafted law and then this has unintended consequences. As in the case in question, where the appeal judges were quite clear that in their unanimous opinion the legislation that the defendants were tried for should never have applied to the crimes that they perpetrated. So, it's not the fault of the judges, but either the legislation being badly written, or the prosecutors using the wrong legislation upon which to charge the individuals.

Brooklands is just down the road from me. In winter they used to run "Ghost Tours" after dark with stories of Percy Lambert and other Brooklands luminaries. The tours finished at the bottom of the banking. In the distance could be heard the sound of an engine, shortly followed by the sight of a Bentley, with headlights blazing and driven by a leather-helmeted driver, bursting into view and disappearing round the banking.

Sounds corny but it was very effective at the time. The evenings were then rounded off with a fish and chip supper in the Bluebird Room. If you haven't been to Brooklands, the museum is well worth a visit, when it reopens, of course.

Hear, hear.

I too used to live just round the corner on the opposite side of the track to Alan & we were frequent visitors, belonging to the Friends. We used to shop at Sainsbury's, Cobham, then on to Brooklands for lunch. Never did the Ghost Tour, but I remember the day Concorde arrived (by road), a big occasion.

Brooklands will always be a part of history. Glad they've kept a reasonable number of the old track in tack, despite all the developments around it. And the museum is something that has been a great addition. Never been there, but I can see why so many have been there.

Brooklands holds so many memories for me as I served my apprenticeship there in the 1960's. I still visit there usually at least a couple of times a year for the New Year's Day gathering and the VSCC driving tests but I must confess I view the site with a heavy heart and nostalgically visualize the scene as was some 60 years ago.
Difficult to believe but when I started my apprenticeship there were close on 11000 employees and although the British aircraft industry was in it's death throws, the erection sheds, machine shops and hangars were full of activity building VC10's, BAC 1-11's, Concorde and TSR2.
The bottom of test hill was fenced off but a couple of us apprentices tried to get up there on our motorbikes without success!
In the floods of 1968 before the Thames barrier was built the River Wey broke it's banks and flooded all the runway and low lying land including the bottom of the club house and surrounding buildings and since I had nothing better to do I made way to work despite everything being brought to halt and accompanied a group of employees who had turned up with 12' clinker built whaler on a trailer and we spent the day trying to rescue equipment from the flooded workshops. I can still remember rowing down the runway!
Sad to say when I left there in 1970 there were less than 4000 workers left with redundancies being announced wholesale on a monthly basis, happily I left for alternative employment and with the strength of my training was able to persue other engineering activities - happy days

Arhh, yes, when we had an aviation industry.....One of the most interesting books I possess is “Project Cancelled” by Derek Wood.
As an aside, I rowed last night for 20 mins and went nowhere and the scenery was pretty dull, too. But at least I could listen to the radio.
