Group 5 Zakspeed Capri question

Hello

Who could give me some info about the evolution of the maximum power output, torque and empty weight figures for the Div. I Zakspeed Capri Turbo from 1980 to 1982 (ex. Big Wing Ludwig car of 1980, Winkelhock "Killer Capri" of 1981 and Niedwiedz Nordschleife record car of 1982). I've checked numerous sources on the internet but I 'd like to know the opinion of the real specialists.

You need Jeremy Walton's book "Capri". Afraid I can't help more than that but he does a good job of describing these fantastic cars.

Yeah that rings a bell!!

There was almost as good a list of drivers for these cars as there was for the earlier RS3100 ETC racers!!!

Ludwig, Niedzwiedz, Winklehock were the 3 main ones that i can recall.

Anyone able to offer some more help to the guy on tech/power specs please.....

I wrote a full 5 page article on the cars some time ago for my website, still isn't on there, but ready to be uploaded in PDF format, give me a few more days, to tweak and upload. Also has some interesting info about the current resto of a '81 car by Mücke Motorsport.

@Frank, there is some stuff on it already, take a look here; www.gogogomagazine.com it's still prototypish and I'm working when I can, to add new articles (I need some help ). Sorry mods for plugging my website, couldn't resist this little opportunity though .

Regarding the Zakspeed Capri article, I have decided to rework it completely and try to get hold of some more quotes from people involved that will enhance the quality.

As for the specs, a quote from the article: "The body was made from Kevlar, an incredibly light composite which was rarely seen in motorsport at the time, let alone anywhere else in 1978. All this lightness did not come cheap though; one set of body parts cost 15.000 DM. Which was the equivalent of a brand new BMW 316 at that time. At races the Zakpeed team had 3 spare sets of body panels, so no expense spared. Something which was also apparent on the rear suspension where coil springs made from incredibly expensive titanium were used. As Erich Zakowski, Zakspeed team-boss, confirmed in 1978: "Weight means everything in group 5 racing, each gram that can be saved is worth gold. 10kg less weight are much more important than 10hp more."

How very true this might be the Capri did not end up with a dog’s dinner under the bonnet as it was fitted with a Zakpeed
developed 1427 cm³ turbocharged Ford engine pushing out 380 HP at the beginning of its life. To achieve this, Zakspeed engineers took the 1300cc engine from Ford’s BD-range. They bored it up to 1426cc and gave it Mahle pistons to cope with the brutal forces unleashed by the KKK turbo. Fuel supply proceeded through Kugelfischer-Bosch mechanical injection and Bosch HKZ ignition. The pistons also got an integrated oil cooling system operated through very fine injectors which cooled the pistons from underneath. German engine expert Dr Schrick was commisioned to do the first engine tests and thus at the end of February 1978 the engine bursted into life for the first time. Zakowski: "We had no experience with turbos and therefore we got to work very carefully, we started off with low boost and gradually build it up to 1.3 bar."

Please flame me for any mistakes, but I'm pretty sure though there aren't a lot of them

NO information, except photos

One of my favourite G5 cars of all time. Lucky to see them in England, at Donington in 1980, for a no-points round of the DTM.

This is Klaus Ludwig in the 1.7 engined version:

Fantastic picture! I aslo attended that race meeting and when I first saw this thread thought I'd find the 35mm slides I took on the day, scan a few and post them on here.
Now I've seen the quality of your picture however I don't think it'll be worth my time searching in my mothers loft for them!
