I can’t see how the event can grow much. I know the paddock has been resurfaced, but there isn’t any extra space! The layout was as confused as last year, but just on a nicer surface.....
2 hour races have their place of course , I just raise an eyebrow at Sunday's. Problem for me is it's a long trip and a 2 hours race takes up most of the morning . I would have liked to have seen the BTCC tribute race in full , as well as rear engined FJ but as I needed to be home for 8ish that wasn't possible. Why not have a 2 hour race last on the programme so part timers like me can see all the other stuff , watch the first 40minutes or so and get off? That's the model I have seen for Guards Trophy etc .

In other news , I thought the new paddock cafe was a big improvement , and the site in general looks better that it has for years , even though it will never look as good as it used to. The run off areas would stop a 747 and , frankly , have wrecked Donington's one time USP - having seen Pro Car, Gp C , F1 , F2 and F3000 races there in the past , all with great viewing , one is now located bloody miles away virtually all round the track.

But standing next to the Lotus Judd F1 car as it fired up and watching people try to tame animals like the Le Mans Tiger still made it a good day .

Was a very enjoyable day out on Saturday, when the weather as good as it was Donington is a lovely place to be and as everyone else said with the improvments being done it makes it just that bit better.

Sum good races on Saturday, tho the Super Touring Trophy was a bit of a disappointment with so few entries, but at least the championship is trying to do sumthing about it by opening up the entry criteria.

Anyway here's my vid from Saturday with the time for the different races if anyone interested:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnK_FtkYzgM

00:00 - 01:30 - Pre-61 Front engined Formula Juniours
01:30 - 04:30 - HSCC Super Touring Car Challenge
04:30 - 07:57 - Pre 63 GT
07:57 - 10:55 - HSCC Derek Bell Trophy for F5000 & F2
10:55 - 16:23 - Historic Touring Car Challenge with Tony Dron Trophy
16:23 - 18:37 - F1 demo
18:37 - 19:29 - Spitfire Flyover
19:29 - 21:56 - RAC Woodcote Trophy
21:56 - 22:45 - Formula Junior rear engine
22:45 - 24:41 - HRDC Touring Greats
22:45 - 25:52 - Jaguar Classic Challenge

Talked about checking the Donington calendar for more events......that was until 11.00 when the "Forbidden Forest" racket started up. It was so loud on the infield of the old hairpin it drown out the PA and most cars. Hour after hour of non stop teckno crap.

Great weather, some nice cars, good company, I enjoyed a day and a half of racing....fantastic value for car club members and friends

Will check out the Donny calendar for future events but only after the Forbidden Forest dates first.
The Forbidden Forest things seem to be one weekend a month during the summer. Or something like that.

It's a bit odd, certainly, but presumably money spinning. Maybe a pre-MSV contract?

One the negative side the far end of the circuit was not as open as usually due to the clash with the other event and access to its side of the estate.

Techno through the night for us locals of course - depending on which way the wind blows.

I agree about the running of two hour races in the morning, believe it or not! A lot of series (Peter Auto and Masters for two) will time their long distance GT or Sportscar race for the end of the middle day (of a 3 day meeting). Silverstone Classic used to organise the same, although that may have changed. As a driver, I quite like it, as it can be cooler! Unfortunately for you, GTSCC always ask for a late morning race (unless a one day meeting), so if you see them listed, that’s what you are going to get. They usually have enough ‘clout’ (with their large high quality grids) for organisers to give them their preferred slot.... I expect it will be the same at Silverstone HSCC in June- in case you’re thinking of going!

The Donny cafeteria is a vast improvement, but IMO so far the food and service isn’t a patch on Snetterton! Early days, of course, but the latter is run as a franchise by very good people. Not sure if Donny is MSV staff or otherwise....

I doubt if any of the other races were less, Robyn! I looked Previous year’s grids and STT was hardly large in 2017 either. Maybe the entrants prefer higher profile meetings like Silverstone Classic?

That will be the "Forbidden Forest" music festival from land just outside the circuit boundary. Not sure whether MSVR "own" this bit of land as part of their lease arrangements.

Paddock emptied quickly as people on way to Monaco.

We enjoyed Pre War race.Third overall .It will work when we have brakes!

Join the Nash and Alvin at sharpe end when that’s sorted.

Not been on a track for seventy years and no testing .It might have won Flying Scotsmanlast weekend but not best way to prepare for circuit race with 24 hr spanner check.

Found out in rally and what came obvious that it flys well on rally but didn’t land very well.Front end was doing what it wanted!

The MSV security staff didn't seem to care too much. 25+ climbed over the wall into Donington before running across to where the racket was coming from and scaled that wall. Security would appear, escort a couple back through the gate at the top and drive off, then as soon as their vehicles were out of sight more youths would drop down and leg it towards the noise.

BTW...next Forbidden Forest is 8th September

Without going into massively irrelevant detail, both the security team and marshals round the circuit were painfully aware of the people coming over the fence and did what little we could to prevent it. From my distant but extremely clear perspective over at the Esses, it was an inevitable game of whack-a-mole.

Having spent all 3 days doing different things in different places (Coppice, the start/finish line and the Esses) I felt like something was missing this year but I'm damned if I can put my finger on what it was.

I know it wasn't oil, there was plenty of that

I had a great time . Should of been driving in three races but ended up with no drives through all sorts of circumstances . Great to catch up with old racing chums and all my ten tenth mates . We had luxury of the garages which was great and also load of the endurance guys and gals used as pit stop /driver change area . Ended up helping them which is always great fun . All the staff . Marshals were very nice and friendly so no complaints . We went to the Bull in Repton a couple of nights and had fantastic beer and pizza . Yea so I had a great weekend . Mind you for the first time in yonks I bought some new race under wear . Flipping eck . £135.00. Sorry Max I should of asked you .

A few snaps from Saturday. Weather much improved from the sleet last time I was at the Festival. Racing all day Saturday / Sunday a much better schedule. Good to be able to walk across to Coppice.

Walked up the outside of Craners and could just about see the cars through the fence. Makes me grateful for unrestricted viewing at Cadwell, Mallory, Oulton, Goodwood ...

The view from the new grandstand at Hollywood on the exit from Redgate is superb, you can see right across to Coppice but as you say the wire safety fencing is pretty obtrusive but I guess if JP's lot is to attract the big series to pay for the upgrading it is a necessary evil. Really enjoyed the weekend if a bit of a stretch for me from the South coast but as a casual observer I was mighty impressed with the circuit improvements generally.
It's interesting to read the comments regarding some of the longer races, personally I always enjoy something other than a 8 or 10 lap sprint as it introduces a number of imponderables into the race strategy but I really felt for some of those drivers in that heat.
That noise from the rave or whatever was going on was absolutely horrendous on Sunday

Inside at Redgate down to the Old Hairpin and then along to Schwantz has better fence free viewing options only slightly marred by the outside fence in the background.

One aspect of Donington is that there are quite a few places where walking up a slope gives you a good view of large parts of the track although taking you further from the cars.

The area that hosts the new grandstand is a case in point. The infield offers a view of the Old Hairpin round to McLeans and almost up to Coppice. The Outside at the Old Hairpin gives sight of Holly Wood, Craner Curves, The Old Hairpin and around to where the stone bridge used to be.

Slightly less good but still better then many places offer, the outside at Craner and down towards the Old Hairpin has a high enough bank to be able to see over the fences for Craner, the Old Hairpin and off towards Schwantz.

And finally the raised area between McLeans and Coppice, designated for Disabled in viewing, has (distant) visibility of Craner and the section from the Mcleans approach through to nearly the second part of Coppice. (And close up views of the aircraft plus a clear line of sight directly down the runway for those seeking some alternative entertainment plane spotting.)

It's also not flat and, generally, has mainly green backdrops not unlike Cadwell or Oulton. Certainly nothing like as industrial as Silverstone has become.

I might have included Brand Hatch (GP) in the list above but it seems that too is becoming a fenced in tunnel.

How long Donington can survive without succumbing to the marching fences is another matter. Hopefully a while longer yet.

The GP loop at Brands is now ruined from a spectators/camermans point of view. All the best viewing spots, in particular the exit at Stirlings are now caged in at the request of the DTM organisers.
