Why is GP2 not called Formula 2?

A missed opportunity in terms of facilitating sponsorship-gaining opportunities for the drivers trying to get a place in this series.

For years the 'ladder' to F1 could be easily misunderstood at first glance to potential sponsors.

Formula 3
Formula 3000
Formula 1

Formula 2 would in no way make it seem a sub-standard series but it would be the logical title.

Why did it get called GP2?

My understanding is that the FIA reserves "Formula N" titles for multi-chassis series, so GP2, being one-make, can't be simply "Formula 2".

They claim Formula 2 already belongs to someone, but ive never seen it anywhere. I dont think you can buy the number Formula designations from the FIA anyways.

Have you watched GP2?

It's excellent and certainly doesn't demean anything.

Id agree with that KB. I cant comment on Formula 2 as ive never seen it, being too young. What I can say though is GP2 is possibly the best single seater race series iv'e ever seen apart from F3000 in say 2000/2001 which IMO was epic, that said GP2 is at least on a parr with that. IMO.

I think Bernie owns the name Formula 2. Many years ago when British F3000 renamed itself to British F2, the organizer asked Bernie for permission and he gave it.

Maybe he is the one not allowing GP2 to be called F2. After all he did order Bridgestone to take their magazine, which has a GP2 car on its cover, off the shelves in a F1 event (with GP2 as support).

I think BSc is right on this one, and the whole GP2 format and organisation is put togethe routside of the FIA by third parties, so it's not directly associated with them.

Yes, GP2 is brilliant for close racing. It is second only to the racing in UK Formula Ford Zetec.

Eek! What?

Diz now dons his nostalgia hat.
Call it whatever you want, but you'll never again see F1 drivers racing in F2 events while they are still current F1 superstars and putting themselves up against the up and comers. Very sad.

You'll never again see drivers die in meaningless races either diz. What a dreadful shame that is.

I remember reading something last year about "Grand Prix 2" having more commercial/marketing appeal than "Formula 2".

Alex K has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I think you have to ask Bernie why is GP2 not called Formula 2?!

Bernie bought marketing, commercial rights to GP1 mark, because he is affraid of losing control on FOH and FOA.

Ah, but it is different. So shouldn't be called the same thing. (irrespective of whether it is better or worse).

I seem to remember that the name 'F3000' was invented because 'F2' was thought to sound second class.

According to Perry McCarthy, Damon Hill once said F3000 is called F3000 to make the drivers look stupid trying to explain what the name means.

I guess the GP2 organizers have kept up with that spirit.

It was called Formula 3000 because they had a three litre engine.

But they didn't change the name when they changed to 2 litre engines (when F1 changed from 3.5l to 3l).

F3000 didn't change to 2 litre engines - it has 3 litre engines right up to its demise last year

So the FIA GT Championship should not be so called because it existed in a different form in the 1950s/60s? Hmmm... not sure about that.
