MSVR to run the BTCC from 2017??
It appears that MSVR have tendered to run the BTCC for 5 years from 2017 when the current contract is up at the end of next year. At present TOCA are rights holder backed by the BARC.
It will be interesting to see how this one pans out. Oh yes it is worth remembering that Alan Gow as well as being the boss of TOCA is also the chairman of the MSA.... http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/119756 |

Yep, I see that Gow has come out on the attack on the way it was run inbetween his spells at the helm, he makes a good point though that all TOCA does is BTCC so is very focused and is not just another championship.
But this can also make it very insular looking, maybe MSVR are thinking that their wider experience can bring more elements and who knows maybe a couple of combined BSB & BTCC 'Best of British' type weekends? |

You could levy that same argument against Gow himself. As well as being MD of TOCA he is Chairman of the MSA, President of the FIA Touring Car Commission, Chairman of IMS, driver manager, etc etc. How focused on BTCC is he?

Of course it depends which hat he was wearing when he made the comments in the article - as MD of TOCA commenting on a rival, or as MSA Chairman commenting on what was best for the sport. |

Not saying that TOCA are the be all and end all, but I tend to agree that putting the licecne with any sort of consortium of circuits or championship organisers would not work. It needs a single promoter IMO and of course JP can put a good case that MSV Group as owners of many of the circuits that BTCC race on, is effectively promoting BTCC races already. |

I'm not saying that MSV should or shouldn't get the contract, just trying to put in some balance. I find the idea put out by some that the BTCC was nothing without Gow a little over the top. After the highs of the mid 90s and sudden change in regs, 2001/02 was going to be a low point regardless of who was in charge. |

I think a lot of people underrate the 01-03 period.
01 obviously had a lack of touring class cars but when you look at the field as a whole, there were a lot of good national-level drivers on the grid and the racing was good. 02-03 had a higher quality field than the series had in subsequent seasons. I'd like TOCA to stay in charge simply because Alan Gow is one of the few people involved in the organisation of motorsport who actually knows what he's doing. |

I agree, 01 saw some big names return and we had more works teams in 02-03. Shame the exodus began in 04, but the racing and grids were great that year. That was when it came back

Discounting part time entries, and production class cars in the early years; this his how the grids lined up (remember I'm only counting car/driver combos that did the whole season) 2000 08 full time entrants 2001 05 full time entrants 2002 14 full time entrants 2003 14 full time entrants 2004 15 full time entrants 2005 10 full time entrants 2006 14 full time entrants 2007 15 full time entrants 2008 21 full time entrants 2009 12 full time entrants 2010 15 full time entrants 2011 18 full time entrants 2012 13 full time entrants 2013 16 full time entrants 2014 24 full time entrants |

Yes 05 we only had 12 cars to begin with, but by the end of 06 we had 26, which was the most since the early 90s.

About the new control parts.
If someone else than Swindon will win the engine tender. Does this mean teams have to buy/lease the new engine instead of the Swindon engine? Same for other parts? |
