Remember he probably only saw one side, it was almost certainly the very rare six door version.

I couldn't agree more about the authenticity of period clothing, but some people just don't "get" it. Having said which, anyone with an eye for the ladies couldn't help but admire some of the more chic and elegant. I leave 'em to their posing in the Village area, where they like to "be seen", and wander off into the boondocks past Lavant, where you get plenty of space on the grass banks and at the fencing.

I don't really mind about the authenticity of many of the entries - it's still preferable to modern F1 and one-make races in club meetings. The ITV4 TV commentator reckoned all the St Marys cars ran in the BSCC in period - Mercury Comet Cyclone? Studebaker Lark? Homologated maybe, but I doubt they ever raced.

Viva GT, those arches are standard, if you jack a Cortina up the opposite side virtually disappears. This is my std sprung road car . . . front left was jacked up as I was tweaking the exhaust.

Goodwood is excellent Theatre, on all levels. History and fact are irrelevant.

Neither a BMW Tisa nor an Alfa GTA's raced at Goodwood in period. lots of 997 & 1071 minis coopers.

OK Zef. thanks for the confirmation. (the only time I managed to get the back wheel of my Anglia that high in the wheel arch back in the day was when it fell off!

I get it now. Yes I am of course too young to remember the Cortina and base all my assumptions on my own heyday.

(I lie, my father had a four door company Cortina with a red stripe down the side. He was featured in Autosport doing a lurid slide on an autocross in it. His boss read Autosport...)

Lots of bits fell off to be honest Baub, but it was my first car. However, on the occasion I was referring to it was actually the wheel that fell off, as some 'prankster' had slackened off my wheel nuts in the college car park.

Yes, agreed. There are many, many more discussion points, as shown by this thread. As Simon H will testify thanks to many of our chats, working out how best to approach all of them has been the source of much thought for a while!

Getting people to say things is easy. Getting them to say things on the record can be harder, but hopefully we can do some more pieces here and there. And, at the same time, continue to support/highlight historic motorsport - I'd love to do another Historics supplement soon.

Tyres is one of the areas of interest. Noting the point about materials and safety, were there more punctures this year than in previous years? If so does the increased performance of the cars create the problem?

Possible, but more likely the quality of the tyres, and debris ( carbon or otherwise!)

A discussion on lap times would go on longer than a Delta tea break natter!

I will offer one example. Having been involved since 2000, with the pole sitting Cortina from '98 (1:39.8) The car was used regularly and developed in a minor way (it was an App K class winning car in HSCC, driven by someone who is now a salaried test driver for AML) it was podium in the early 2000's, then dropped away a bit, best laps around 1:35. Jackie Oliver shared a few times before being poached by BMW! It had an engine from one of the 'specialists' around 160-165 BHP, which lasted a year, revved to 8000 max. Car was largely as anyone who knows a modicum about Cortina, would expect it to look like. FWIW, I inherited a few parts from the car, and still run the same rear leaf springs I was given that I built it with!

In 2011 the AMR LC did 1:35's, and I knew that shell was 'optimised' and the car built with no expense spared, it was however, a Cortina and I suspected the engine to be proper, I followed Henry for a fair while as he eeked away a second or so a lap as the race went on.

To leap to low 30's and, as was reported via YouTube, a 1:29.9 in testing, merely confirms extreme development, of the not very historic variety.

As for minis, I don't know details, but a straight fia mini does 1:36-38 now (there are a few apparently) so to do a '38 then suggests a gp5 car like one of Norman Grimshaws.

It's an impossible ask or task to make comparisons, like Pele vs Messi, or Clark vs Hamilton.

The only thing that can be said with certainty is historic motorsport gets less historic year on year.

That's a very good, even-handed appraisal I think. There is no doubting the thrilling spectacle that Goodwood provides and there is no stopping some level of development of the cars (and drivers) which has probably always been part and parcel of historic racing. In the early days of historic racing (50s, 60s) the cars had already been developed during their contemporary racing careers and were far from original. But the point about lack of variety to the TT Grid in particular chimes with my concerns.

Interestingly on the lap times issue....the times for the Goodwood Trophy were noticeably slower than in recent years. The fastest lap in the race (posted by Tom Dark) was 1.33. Mark Gillies' qualifying lap in 2014 was in the 1.29s. Both him and Calum Lockie were in the 1.33s this year in qualifying and the race. Why would that be? The track was dry........

On the subject of times . . . . A little light amusement for all

Rumours abound surrounding the preparation of Settrington cup J40's . . . Whether true or not I care not, ours hangs on the wall. Retired until the next generation.

However, someone completed the course in under a minute this year, it's a very variable race, and the chicane isn't really as it was, but, that's 16s quicker than Arthur when he won by over 4s clear of anyone else.

What made me spit my wine and fall about laughing was the story Mrs Zef came home with last night, that someone had employed a personal trainer to get their child 'race ready' over the summer holiday.

Clearly we have some 8 year olds out there in fear of getting disinherited for underperforming!
