It could be due to social media and the internet - in the 90s you only got coverage for your sponsors by being at the front. Now social media followings can be well above the viewing figures of ITV.

Your definition of ‘deserve’ differs from mine. If you can sell your brand well enough to get enough money to pay for an season, you deserve to be there.
