Always a a welcome break after an excess of alcohol and Xmas pudding! Unfortunately we are pretty starved in the South East of England of rallying action so this event is always a welcome start to the New Year and always well subscribed.

We've got our entry in - although looking at the entry list so far we won't be troubling the top end of the field! There are some very quick cars in these MSN championship rounds now, there were always a couple but now there are a significant amount of very quick cars. Focus WRC, Fiesta WRC, MINI WRC, Peugeot 306 Maxi - not a bad lineup!

Add to that the hoard of Escorts and then there are some other interesting cars entered - Porsche Cayman, Darrian, TR7, Chevette. Also a couple of rallycrossers entered - Vince Bristow (in his Escort this time not the BMW) and Darren Scott in his C2 - I've not seem him on a rally entry list before.

As you say even with my limited knowledge of rally machinery, the entry list is quite impressive. good news that it doesn't dissuade local entry - always good to see the orange peril top of the list(for now!).

Only a week to go thank goodness and the season kicks off with this chilly start at Brands. For a petrolhead like me the absence of live action makes the Christmas period seem even more dreary, what we need is the return of the Boxing day meeting at Brands to brighten the dark days.

I’m missing the event for the first time ever today, and it feels a little odd! Having driven, co-driven and volunteered on it, does feel strange not to be involved or there.

For others who cannot make it, you can find live results at http://www.vola-racing.com/rallypro/nicholls/

Having now thawed out, it was good day I think for all concerned if a tad chilly as usual but the sights and sounds particularly from the rear wheel drive Escorts really made for great day. Congrats to Bert Mk2 for a 3rd class place and 15th overall, no mean feat amongst some pretty sophisticated and more powerful opposition, roll on Goodwood next month

I thought it was positively tropical at Brands this year (compared with last year anyway!). I must say thank you though to all the marshals standing out all day so we could play

Great result for us - at the start of the day we'd have said top twenty would have been a good result, there were some serious weapons out there today. We just made it to the end - we were struggling with the clutch on the last couple of stages, if there had been another stage we wouldn't have made it to the end.

A couple of rallycrossers were out there as well today - Darren Scott in the S1600 C2 and Vince Bristow (in his Mk1 Escort rather than the BMW). Vince was very generous in moving out of our way a few times (the way the loops fell we always seemed to catch him on our 2nd loop whilst he was on his 1st).

The 306 Maxi was as impressive as ever and took another well deserved win, also the Newtons new Nova looked very quick. I didn't see the Darian at all out on the stages - but I assume it went as well as it looked?

Another great event from CMC and a good day out marshalling on it again.
Thanks all.

With my very limited knowledge of rallycross, as you say the Peugot of Chris West
was as very impressive as it has been at Brands previously and it's always a joy to watch the Newtons in their giant killing Nova(which I assume is different car this year) but the stand out for me was Mark Kelly/Coleman mk2 Escort which looked and sounded sublime all day.

First time at this event and will be back again, great range of entries and the battle between Chris West, John Stone and Mark Kelly was great to watch. With the new engine in the 306, its turned into a total weapon for these rallies. Here's my vid from the days action if anyone interested:

Yes, the Newtons have a new Nova this year. Their first event was Deepcut a few weeks back where they had a teething issue (whilst we were exchanging seconds with them on a few stages, it helped us take the class win in our Micra with them second - but they were rapid and learning the car!).

I can't remember everything they've done, but it's a new shell (and paint job!). Really pleased to see them do well yesterday, although having seen an onboard, they had a big moment on two wheels and were lucky not to roll.

Thoroughly enjoyable day if a little chilly. Dry though. Link above to SS1/2 where I got all but two of the cars (both I think had "challenges"). SS8 is also on Flickr.

Other stages (from different places) will follow shortly. Next stops Goodwood and Snetterton ...
