Tag Heuer withdraw from F1 timekeeping duties

It's 15 days before the new Grand Prix season gets underway - and the official timekeepers have dropped this bombshell:

"...TAG Heuer has decided to relinquish its FIA Formula One Timekeeping activity after 12 years of participation."

This has a lot to do with the announcement earlier this month that TAG Heuer will be the official timekeepers for the IRL. Their withdrawal is with immediate effect.

I assume that, unless somebody can step in pretty fast, we'll all be using stopwatches for the start of 2004.

I can't imagine that TAG Heueur didn't let the FIA and F1 know in advance of this announcement.

well that means they will have to get out the pen and paper and stop watch and do it all manually..
if only clutch, throttle control and gear changes was the same

i dount this will be too hard to rectify, the article said that Tag supply some equiptment, but i'd assume that equiptment would remain in place and they could still run with it.
They must have contingency plans for this kind of thing, only the money will go, and that can be replaced by almost anything, doesn't have to be a company involved with time.

i dont think it could be any company that would allowed to sponser the time keeping.. could you imagine the durex condoms time keeping, or better still, viagra time.
viagra time could be used to see how fast the cars get up to speed !
and durex time could be used to time how long it takes to change rubber during pitstops !

now that would be worth watching

I could never pronounce their name anyway - without sounding drunk. In fact, if you throw up you may actually get the 'heuerruer' bit more accurately.

There must be plenty of timing technology companies who would leap at the chance of this one. Who does things like the athlethics / Olympics - I seem to remember seeing Seimens name up (please don't link this to Jason's post above - you naughty chums).

If not I'll volunteer to stand on the line shouting 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi ...

Well, its obvious the IRL offer's much higher visibility and prestige than F1 does.

Maybe Tag is not interested in Bernies third world future?

Maybe it ain't so bad thing after all... I consider Longines timing graphics that was seen Eurosport in late 80's and beginning of 90's to be much more informative (considering the technic that was/is available) than TAG Heuer's.

I found it a bit odd and someway distracting that after two world championships Mika Häkkinen's name wasn't written with skandies (ÄÖÅ) and Finland's flag was in wrong colours -and still is... Shouldn't be too hard to change.

maybe they're not so sure that billions of Indians and Chinese will queue from their bidonvilles to purchase swiss watchs...

TSN.ca suggests that Swatch is the frontrunner to become the official time keeper. (Owns Tissot as well)

Mmm...

So instead of Tag-Heurer (a sponsor of the McLaren-Mercedes team), we might end up with Swatch (founder of the Smart, together with Mercedes) ...
