ARP Formula 3

Hi All,

In 2006 i'm looking to purchase an ARP formula three car and test before racing. I would like to know how much you can pick these up for and how costly they are to run ?

I currently own a fford which i've run at castle combe for the last year and I managed to run this on a budget of £1000.00

Paul, I am dissapointed your not sticking with the FF1600.

I am sure the cost of a reasonable F3 car would be much more than the RF86 you have (I think its an 86).

The race entry fee's are a little bit more, and I believe you go through more tyres (although I am only speaking from what I have heard or read)


I also heard they are a lot more maintenance (from someone who runs an 86 and a 97 car) and a lot more to go wrong with, especially the newer cars.

firstly, how do you run a FF1600 for a season for £1000?? Or is that a weekend??
ARP F3 - engine rebuild double the price of FF rebuild / half the mileage / carbon fibre cars - so there is no thing as a cheap crash / tyres aren't too much more - last pretty well.

If you run an ARP car for a year on £1000 - I will buy you a beer!!

I ran my formula ford at castle combe for a season (albeit I missed 2 rounds) for a £1000.00 easily.

This obviously was just for petrol and race entry fees...no crashes etc..

If you only spent £1000 for the season ,stick with what you are doing,Or was it the 1983 season cost at Castle Combe? see

go to a few races and talk to the guys who race them.But as a general rule, ARP Class b car could be run for double the cost a FF1600 car.If you are lucky!!!!!!!

How many rounds was that for ?
Also how much was the entry fees ?

If it is for £1000.00 stay in it as anything else is far more. Entry fees alone would cost you more.

I have converted a F3 Reynard to mono spec. Ie taken out the very expensive F3 race engine and fitted it with a standard road engine from a 1996 VW Golf!
This has more bhp than an ARP 8v Vw engine too.
The running costs are very similar to that of my FF1600. Brake linings are more expensive than an FF for example but the whole package requires less maintenance than my 642 Lola!
ARP run on special fuel, control tires etc. This bumps up the cost some what. But speaking to one or two competators in ARP they can run a class B car for the weekend on about £500. That is doing all work, engine rebuilds etc your self.Entry fees are more, i believe around the £265 mark.... i think, but you do get good track time.
To buy a class B car you are looking at at least £8000 to £10000+ for a good car.

If you want to run an F 3 car without the expense, then as Lola suggests, buy the best you can afford and put a decent road 2 litre engine (vauxhall 16 valve ?) in, say 200bhp with racing exhaust etc and run it in Monoposto.
