so what have they changed this year to the famous turn 8? we have seen everything from tyre barriers being moved, to a sweeping bend to armco added, going with the trend and the amount of carnage at the corner last year?

They have resurfaced the corner and fiddled with the profile through the corner. The outside concrete wall appears to be in the same location, the inner wall appears to be about a metre or so inside the inner kerb line but it looks like they will once again put the armco barrier in the gutter line of the inner kerb

And they will place the external grandstand closer to the corner so the views are further restricted.

Corner is being further "sanitised" and just oneday these track planners are going to out do themselves with all the restrictions and track furniture.

Best they not seriously maim or kill someone and end up in front of the coroner.

I thought they were using the F1 circuit this year to provide more room for corporate stands.

No its rumored every year that they will go back to the F1 track. I think they will in a year or two. Would be great

But you will still have problems with the corner geometry at the brewery corner unless the outer wall is positioned way back against the eastern kerb of Dequetteville Terrace - remember Skaife when he flipped the Skyline and Kakkinen when he launched in 1995 - the fence line was way back and he hit the tyre wall!

That outer wall has to be "ballooned" so the safety wall can be fitted properly.

I was only driving there today, it appears to be much the same as last year, except I noticed some pads of cement where normally a traffic island would be, not sure if these pads will cause any problems but a change in surface half way around an ultra fast corner could be interesting. No I didnt take my camera so I cant provide photos, if no one else does I am going to be going down that on Monday or Tuesday night and I might try to remember to take the camera to get some photos.

I think there was nothing wrong with the corner in the first place, except that remove the tyre barrier which was on the outside and leave the kerb there, then the drivers can choose to run over the kerb or follow the profile of the corner. I belive that they should lower the inside fence and remove a portion of the stands so the drivers can see the round corner for any danagers

Theres nothing wrong with the corner now. My suggestion is for Dumbrell not to get over excited and take six cars with him and all will be fine. Regardless of the way it was or the way it is now there has always been carnage there. The drivers know it and hopefully more sense will be used whilst driving around it. Bring on Adelaide and 888 racing.

The more run off you put on a fast corner... the most chance you have of a car hitting a barrier at a head on angle..

By keeping the barriers at the edge of the circuit.. you in effect actually lesson the impact should an incident occur.

I think in Hakkinens case... if the concrete followed the outside of the corner instead of that run off 'head-on' into a tyre wall, he wouldnt have sufferend the massive G-Loading, and the severe injuries.

He was airborne when he hit the tyre wall and that was set back much further than the existing wall alignment they now use for Turn 8.

Can you remember how far Skaife travelled "off" line before he hit the wall and inverted?

I'm no racer, so I guess I can't claim to be knowledgable. But I would have thought every corner in motor racing is dangerous. How dangerous depends on how fast the drivers want to take it and how many cars they think can fit through at once. If THEY get it wrong - why blame the corner?!
I think turn 8 is one of the most exciting in the series. If they keep going with this sanitising, they'll all end up driving on a circular track at constant speed or on a drag strip!

Went up and ahad a look at it this morning, but no camera sorry. Looks the same as last year with the low gaurd rail on the apex side and similar run off at the exit.
