Will anybody ever break the stranglehold that the top teams have on F1. In todya's climate can anyother teams innovate their way to success?

Sadly I think not. If you look back at how some of the pedigree's were started - John Barnard started the great McLaren MP4 series that dominated the 80's. Adrian Newey created the Williams that dominated the early 90's. This rollercoaster has just rolled on - along with Ferrari buying up anybody with a sniff of design talent.

I guess the 'Danka' Arrows of a couple of years ago was one of the most innovative cars from a mid-grid team, John Barnard designed it but unfortunately he is a designer with 'expensive tastes' - more used to the Ferrari/McLaren resources.

Arrows could barely afford to run the car, yet alone develop its potential and ironically for all the innovation they had - they would have done better with a simple, efficent car.

So I guess the answer is however clever you may be if you can't back it up with the budget - you end up further behind.

Which comes back to cash - and you guessed it the top teams. Ahhh......

The current top teams have not always been so. Ferrari was in the doldrums for years. Someday Todt/Brawn/Byrn/Shue will be gone. They'll still have money, but that wont assure them success.

Ask Jaguar.

If we ever get a period when the rules remain stable, things will change a lot - the small teams can't keep up with rapid change, but once things settle down, they will make rapid progress. And it all depends on who the pilotes ae, as well. The best and most expensive car in the world will go nowhere if it is driven by a prat.

Actually I think with all the big manufacturers coming into the sport, it is difficult to predict who the top teams will be in 5 or 10 years time. We've got Mclaren and Ferrari the top two teams at the moment, Renault who dominated the 90's returning with Benetton, Honda who dominated the 80's returning with BAR, Williams seem likely to return to the top of the field soon now they've got a decent engine again, Jaguar should get it right sooner or later and then we've got Toyota coming in and they're not going to be there just to make up the numbers.
