Good news (also for the WTCC/DTC/STCC). It would surprise me if they start this series if there are no Japanese manufacturers involved.

It would be a sensible move if these guys were to coheadline with FN.

Wow! Not bad at all. They should partner with the Formula Nippon and Japanese F3, I think.

Now let's start betting on the models to be chosen:

Honda: Civic
Nissan: Bluebird Sylphy or Tiida/Latio
Toyota: Blade (hatchback, i.e. Auris sibling) or Corolla (sedan)
Mazda: 3
Subaru: Impreza
Mitsubishi: Lancer
Suzuki: Kizashi

I thought it was partly down to the fact that they had just produced a brand new WRC car which was going to be out of the regs when S2000 came in?

Anyway, Prodrive are now doing the Mini program, so who knows who would do a Subaru run now?

How far away from S2000 are the Subarus that were running in the Nürburgring 24h?

It's going to Super 2000 but with 1600cc turbo engines. Which isn't the same as Super 1600.

Though this is great news and I look forward to seeing the return of domestic touring car racing to Japan, does anybody else feel that this has just come too late for S2000/S1600T/whatever it's called? These regs are fairly long in the tooth now, and they're far from perfect.

If this announcement and widespread adoption of S2000 had come 5 years ago, I would have been more excited for the future of touring cars. But as it is now, with S2000 being dropped by the BTCC and having endured years of them messing about with equalisation in the category, this announcement is just like putting a sticking plaster on a mortal wound...

On a lighter note, hopefully this is a taste of things to come: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki356X9--CU

That looks great. I guess we will have to wait and see regs wise. I do prefer the NGTC regs, but if Japan is going to S2000 then maybe the WTCC should hold onto them for just a bit longer.

Also was that Vaxuhall with a Nissan badge?

I have a fear that all the NGTC cars will sound the same.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. We don't get to see the full potential of a NGTC car until the end of the year.

I'm not the closest follower of Japanese motorsport (news isn't always that fast coming out), but does no Honda automatically mean no Suzuka or Motegi? If I understand correctly, Honda and Toyota throw lots of money at FN and Super GT (plus Nissan in the latter), and most circuits are manufacturer owned (Fuji owned by Toyota, Suzuka, Motegi by Honda and Yamaha have Sugo). I can't think of any actual circuits (i.e. ones that hold actual races) in Europe owned by manufacturers.

There is no major race series that continues without the support of the auto manufacturer in Japan.
The series that has succeeded as a business in Japan is only Super GT.
It is not possible to continue even with Formula Nippon if there is no financial support of the auto manufacturer.
JTCC was popular before. However, it is a doubt whether new JTCC succeeds as a business.
Therefore, if Honda doesn't participate in JTCC, neither Suzuka nor Motegi want will hold JTCC.
Suzuka holds WTCC. It is because a lot of spectators can be expected because it is a world championship race.
