IMO it's fair to say that Merc do make good cars, having owned one or two, but so do many others. I don't recall Merc using Lewis in any adverts, but I stand to be corrected here. Frankly, because a racing driver races for a team that manufactures cars doesn't make me want to buy one.

Also the "Russell effect" has been discounted by Toto and I'm happy to accept that.

Politically I understood Domenicali to say that Lewis is a force for good and he wants him to keep doing what he's doing.

All of which IMO really points to money or "compensation" as being the sticking point.

An interesting point is that it is only just over a month old, and Hamilton is part of the 2021 Mercedes advertising campaigns. My guess is that he may appear in a Superbowl advert this weekend confirming his 2021 drive for the team.

In all seriousness. A Mercedes commercial for the NFL Superbowl staring Lewis will leave 95+% of the viewers (predominantly US based) scratching their head and asking... Who was that?

What I mean is that he will be in a Mercedes advert along with some other better known stars in the US, and his footage will identify him as one of their 2021 drivers.

I believe I am one of the few people who watch NFL and F1! Now if they got Colin Kaepernick in a Merc then there would be a lot of people who couldn’t cope, they’d be brought to their knees.

I think a Merc appears driven by the guy from Wkend in the Pepsi ad promoting the half time show.

Rarely do we see ads (on mainstream telly anyway) with F1 drivers in it. Last I remember was for the Megane with the which had Alonso and Trulli’s bottoms featured. Or was it Flav’s?

Not sure it was actually on proper telly, but I remember a Hamilton advert from 1997. It was a Merc one ages ago with him and Alonso. It was good fun. Especially the end.

Hmm, not exactly mainstream, but I take your point, it could be that they are waiting to roll it out with a big announcement. Mind you, an S Class isn't exactly a car for the masses.

Are you saying the delay on signing is to provide drama with an Superbowl unveiling? I don't think you are, but if so, that would be a lot of effort for effectively a lot of head scratching by US viewers. If the target is the F1 audience an different method of delivering the news (focus on a Eurocentric sport or event) would be used.

Assuming he is in a Mercedes commercial for the Superbowl. My guess that is more about that being a long time in the works marketing effort and likely would say zero about him being a 2021 Mercedes driver or not. Where I am coming from is that no doubt Mercedes fully intended/wanted/wants him to drive for them in 2021. But note the green foliage in the footage for that commercial. My guess the footage was shot months ago (unless they found a southern hemisphere location more recently and I think that is probably unlikely but who knows). My point is long lead times. So I would not use any current commercials as "reading the tea leaves" unless the commercial is specifically to address the topic of 2021 driver lineup somehow. My 2 cents!

I agree. I don't think the plan was for the announcement to be linked to a Superbowl advert, but that the Superbowl advert was planned and filmed with him in it.
Knowing his US profile, they would undoubtedly have to introduce who he is to the viewer, so when he appears a banner on the screen will read something like: 'AMG Mercedes Formula One Driver'.

At this point, the speculation in this thread over him signing will be answered, and we can move onto the next stage of analysis over his F1 presence.

Do I think the Mercedes Superbowl advert is the method they chose to reveal his signing? No.
Do I think he will appear in a Superbowl advert? Yes.
Do I think that advert will confirm his as a driver for 2021? Yes.

Who knows, maybe he'll be driving The Weeknd out in a Merc for the half time show.....

and then they go on twitter to find out who he is. SB commercials are a show unto themselves with a lot of sites and programs devoted to breaking them down for the consumers.

i believe some of big/traditional SB advertisers are opting for more covid related awareness ads, some, i suspect, will focus on social awareness, while others will go for entertaining.

im thinking there will be extra attention about the ads this year so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
