Are F1 cars full automatic, in terms of transmission? or do they use their fingers to control the transmission (change gears) from the steering wheel?

they can be fully automatic. Juan Montoya has a fully automatic gear box on his car. It's down to personal choice of the drivers.

And i think they can be both. I have seen Juan actually shift gears, then let the auto work on the next change. I guess some of these gearboxes have a manual override. I would certainly want to be able to control my own downchanges if i got caught out of the powerband and the auto wasn't fast enough.

do u think that this is why we see montoya with the back end of the car all over th place then?

I thought a few of them were running with automatic upshifts but semi-automatic downshifts (i.e. paddles on the wheel). JV and JPM are two drivers that come to mind.

Somehow I think that the computer has more chance of keeping it in the correct gear and at the correct revs than the driver! It'll be fast enough. Modern F1 Gear changes are measured in thousands of a second now, human reaction times in tenths of seconds!
For a road car I agree.

However there must (?) be sometimes when the driver wants to override the computer so a fully automatic system, with the option to manually override it sounds like the way forward.

Sometime ago, i read an interview with a team engineer and one of the things discussed is the automatic gearshift.

If i remembered correctly, he said that cars now run with auto-gearbox and said something with the effect that if a driver changes up or down a gear too early and at inappropriate times, the system would ignore the driver's input.

Don't really know how things work in detail nowadays...

at the nurburg race last season, itv showed an onboard lap from jpm's car (where he got massive opposite lock through shell kurve) and martin brundle actually pointed out that the car was doing all the gearchanges not the driver.
