Best teammates ever
I wanted to get some old timers (just kiddin' guys) opinions on the best teammates ever. I've got to vote for Jimmy Clark and Graham Hill in Chapman's Lotus in the early 60s.
If I were voting purely on results, it would, of course, be Senna and Prost in the late 80s, but since they had by far the best equipment and disliked each other so much, I really have a hard time thinking of them as "teammates" in the purest sense of the word. Of course, I would like to know a little more on how Hill and Clark got along in the 60s. Last edited by zealot; 22 Aug 2001 at 19:46. |

By all accounts and appearances, Clark and Hill got on very well. Remembering that they were very keen rivals, both of them always in the running for the title in the early sixties, they got on well.
That said, Jim wasn't at Graham's party after his AGP win in 1966... that was an all BRM affair, though Mike and I were there, and I'll never understand how that happened... But they were different people, Hill the outgoing one, Clark the retiring type for the most part. Now, when they got into the same team (again? were they together at Lotus in 1959?) in the late sixties they clearly had to work together, but there was an issue between them... Chapman favouring Clark. I recall a report on a USGP where Clark, out in front, had his rear suspension collapsing and had to slow, while Hill was being ignored by Chapman when he could have been told Jim was limping and could be beaten... As to the best team mates, there are a few that stand out... Collins and Hawthorn... real good mates, poms together in an Italian team. Jean Behra and Harry Schell... worked well together at Maserati and BRM. Fangio and Moss... the master and the student at Mercedes in 1955. Hill and Ginther... Ginther the test driver to help give Hill the winning car, and an able backup man. Rosberg and Mansell... another master and student relationship. Brabham and McLaren... two constructors came out of a three and a half year partnership, can't have been too bad, and even years later they were helping each other out. Stewart and Cevert... again, a master and pupil, the baton about to be passed when... Caracciola and Chiron... two greats together. |

Another master/student relationship was the one between Luigi Villoresi and Alberto Ascari in the late 40s-early 50s. They drove together for Maserati, Ferrari and Lancia.
Among other good relationship between team-mates in F1 we can mention : Ivan Capelli - Mauricio Gugelmin at March / Leyton-House Niki Lauda - Alain Prost at mcLaren Niki Lauda - Clay Regazzoni at Ferrari James Hunt - Jochen Mass at mcLaren |
