They collided in a right hand curve, I don't know which one. It was one of those deals where each driver blamed the other. Mansell attempted to pass on the inside and Senna absolutely slammed the door on him. From my recollection I think the corner was Mansell's, but Senna certainly didn't agree.
When we look back at the '89 championship and what went wrong for Senna, we tend to focus on the GP of Japan, but this race cost Senna dearly. He went from a possible 1st or 2nd place finish to DNF, and Prost moved from 4th to 2nd. |

Actually, it was worse than this for Senna. Mansell had been black-flagged. This was the race when Mansell had been black flagged for a pit stop violation and ignored (or didn't see) the flag. He caught Senna and took him out AFTER he had been disqualified. Senna would have won with Prost 3rd if the red mist (Mansell's and his own) hadn't expunged him.

Conspiracy theorys or why i never liked Fiorio
Fiorio wanted Ferrari to have the no. 1 in 90, and Prost had already signed for Ferrari, so he told Mansell to ruin Senna's race, so that Prost could be WDC.
Yeah I was 16 at the time... But it made sense for me! and still might LOL xxx Carla |

If this was the race I remember, the fun part came afterwards, when Mansell stormed into Senna's neighbourhood, zipped his race overall over his mouth, grabbed him by the throat, lifted him off his feet and pinned him to the wall, and instructed him that the next time he behaved in that unruly fashion, he had better be sure to finish the job.
When Senna recovered his breath and his poise, he observed, "When a man grabs you by the throat, he has obviously not come to apologize." Good call. |

I think the incident you mention happened after the 1987 Belgian GP. I don't think this kind of thing happened after the '89 Estoril race.
I wonder what Senna was thinking, fighting a disqualified driver for the lead? Did his pit not tell him about the black flag? Instead of gaining 6 points on Prost (10 pts vs 4) he lost 6 points (0 pts vs 6), a 12 point swing. This might be where he lost the 1989 championship. |

Roy2 you may well be right. But I thought it was pretty funny whenever it was that it happened.
And between the two of them Prost and Senna cooked up enough conspiracies to keep Ross Perot happy for generations to come. Most of the time they seemed to be conspiring against each other. |

Mansell grabbed Senna in the pitgarage in 1987 at Spa.....
After Senna grabbed the lead at the re-start Mansell try to go around the outside of Senna going into Les Combs. The Williams came together with the Lotus and both span out in unison. Senna was out on the spot but Mansell re-joined for a few tours before the under tray damaged that he sustained became terminal. The corner was Senna’s and he blamed Mansell but Mansell blamed Senna....... In Estoril 1989....... Coming into the pit-lane too hot Mansell locked up his wheels under braking and slid past his pit box. The mechanics ran to pull him back but ignoring his lolly-pop man Mansell selected reverse gear and reversed back into the pit box. Reversing in the pit lane was (and still is) illegal and Mansell was shown the black flag for three laps after he rejoined the track after his pit-stop. He was fighting with Senna for second place and claimed he did not see the black flag for the three laps it was shown. To make matters worse Mansell tried for a gap that was not there into turn one and bother were eliminated. Mansell and Senna were 50% 50% to blame for the accident but Mansell should have not been there. He was to be banned form the next race in Spain and Ferrari got a $50,000 fine for not pulling him in. Mansell... what a guy |
