Sticker graphics on helmets?
I am after some guidance on what to do and what not to do - my pals got a graphics cutter which he van do block colour stickers (he makes graphics for cars/vans etc) - was wondering if these are suitable for my Shoei? I heard somewhere you have to be careful with the glue. Also what does the MSA say about adding sticker graphics, will I need to get a new blue sticker?

I think the problem of stickers on helmets is the geographers problem. You can't fit a map (a sticker) on a globe(helmet) without folds unless the sticker is quite small. And helemts are suppose to present a hard,, smooth surface to stop them catching on things. Of course, they get around this with 'wraps', so if your friend can make really stretchy stickers........

Just had a look - should be ok as a Shoei isnt one of the cheap ones they talk about. Some graphics will cover a couple of light paint chips hopefully, caused by gravel not crashing I hasten to add.
Think I might have more problems with the fact the BS sticker half felloff in the wet a few years back, although you can see the BS6658 bit which is important, and the Blue MSA sticker is still on it, even if it does date back to 2002. I say that 'cos Ive had to argue with scrutineers before... |

Only problem with wraps is they might think you're trying to hide something...

LOL, my first thought was "He's going to race with THAT on his head?" Nah, I think the helmet would probably be OK as it is, I've just seen a lot of messages on here asking the same question and people just say to be careful because some scrutineers might want to peel the wrap off and see what damage you might be hiding underneath. I take it you're trying something bigger than karts?
You've seen my helmet stripes...A simple paint job is £300-£350, I saved myself £343.50 by buying them from an art shop |

I used a couple of rolls of vinyl tape to acheive my 'look'. However, i don't race MSA so it has never been inspected by scrutineers.

Ive had my crash helmet professionaly done by a vinal man and have been racing with various designs in vinal for around 5 years.
3 of the years were in Super 1, 2 in Easykart and Even used it over in italy for the World Finals. (ignore friend tweeking my nipples, only decent picture i got) You cant tell its stickers unless you are actually touching it. And a damn bit cheaper than paint! |

Except you can still see the indentations. If I was a scrut, I WOULD be looking under those stickers!
And if I can see it from a dodgy phone camera picture, then they must be pretty obvious marks... |

Scrutes had no issues with it, apart from the MSA badge was out of date.

Best to use a Vinyl with an acrylic water based adhesive as opposed to a solvent one.
Also a cast wrapping vinyl will work best as it's designed to conform into recesses when heated with a hair dryer or heat gun. I did mine and have had no issues with scrutineers so far. |
