i'm not a huuge rally fan but i do watch it on the bbc when i can, and at the moment im wondering what the difference is between a group A car and a WRC as mitsubishi seem to have competed perfectly well with a group A car!

Here's a brilliant site where you can find a concise explanation of various classes, present and past, in the WRC (way to go, Tryphon!)- http://www.rallycars.com/Cars/Cars_Background1.html.
Basically, the WRC class was introduced in a bid to lower the overall costs (since the number of cars required for homologation is 50), and attract more manufacturers, especially those who do not have a 2-litre-turbocharged-4WD cars in their line-ups. For that purpose (or because of that), a much wider spectre of modifications (as opposed to Group A, for innstance) was allowed.

Basically a WRC car is easier to work with than a Group A car. More things can be done with a WRC car.

Mitsubishi have done every possible upgrade on the Group A Lancer to keep is at the top, but now is the time for a WRC car.

Its like trying to win the F1 title with a 3 year old car, which has had every possible upgrade it can have.
