Frequent Crashing in New Forum

I seem to crash every time I open a new thread. Once I've gone through the process, I can usually get back in to stay.

What exactly do you mean by 'crashing' ? What error does the forum give ? What page are you on when it does so, and what exactly are you doing at the time ? What browser/OS are you using ?

I'm using Internet Explorer. The Message I get says "You have performed an illegal operation and the application will be terminated." It happened in both the F1 Forum and the Gravel Trap, and once when I opened the SiteNews Forum and saw the list of threads.

The forced closing would occur as soon as I clicked on topic, a thread or the "Reply" to topic button. If I went back to the same spot, I would be able to get farther into the topic before being forced out.

I am at work now where we use "Netscape" and have had no problems.

What version of Explorer are you using, EERO, and what OS are you on ?

I'm also using IE5, and I was having this problem recently too, until I discovered my graphics card couldn't keep up with 16-bit colours. I switched to 256 colours in display properties, and it hasn't given me the "You have performed an illegal operation and the application will be terminated." box since. I suspect it's the driver.

IE5 and Windows '98. My settings are true color.

I'm in over my head here but I think I've got a pretty good graphics card.

Going to 256 colors has not alleviated the problem. And everything seems slower now.

No problems over here. I'm using Internet Explorer 5 with 16-bits colors and everything is working fine.

I just tried 16 Bits and no luck-its driving me crazy. I've been forced out 20 times in the last half hour. Help please!!!

It usually happens as a new window opens or as I choose a thread.

EERO, you're describing exactly what was happening to me - it drives you mad, doesn't it?

"Oooh! I'll look at that..." ILLEGAL OPERATION!!! "DAMN!!"

The only thing that helped me was the change in display settings. I tried everything, I even visited the Microsoft support site here:

I hope you resolve your troubles, my friend. I remember I considered 'adjusting' my PC with my biggest hammer. You have my sympathies...

Do you have anything else running at the same time? Try shutting everything else off (Use CTL + ALT + DLT if necessary)

Have you installed anything new recently? Downloaded any new software or patches/drivers? Anything? Or is it only since the site was upgraded?

I hope you get it sorted, EERO. There are quite a few helpdesk people inhabit this place - they might be able to help.

Yesterday I replied to a topic in the gravel trap. Since my spelling usually is not to good I tried the spellcheck. It sort of came up and then the message"this program has made an illegal something or other and will shut down" and the sucker did. So I had to close the window and get back into it again and then retype the message again.
I'd love to use spellcheck but I'm scared to.
I just did and this time it worked.

Its still working. Sparky, you had asked if this had happened before the site update and the answer is "no."
Last week, we downloaded Shockwave, and my son and I have been playing "TankWars". This was before the Update, but maybe there was a conflict with "Shockwave"?

Glad you got it sorted EERO! I had a problem a while ago when Netscape would crash on me a lot, so I forced myself to use Exploder - until I realised it was even worse for crashing and went back to Netscape! It's bloody irritating though isn't it ?

It doesn't ever seem to crash for me at home (seriously - knock on wood!), and I have Internet Explorer. At work, however, where I have Netscape, it sometimes crashes. (I don't visit here all that often from work, though.)
