Last season’s qualifying pile up at Croft was horrific, thankfully everyone involved lived to race another day

Lived yes, but poor Jeff Smith isn't back doing what he loves. I'm sure coaching his son goes some way to making up for his enforced absence from behind the wheel.

Well, here's hoping Brett will make his father proud.

Hunter Abbott crashed into a camera tower once.

We had a couple of over the barrier moments in the 90s. O'Dor's roll over the barrier in the 92 TOCA Shootout and Russell Spence going through the fencing at Oulton in 99. We were the lucky no spectators were injured. The former was helped by there not being much of a crowd puller that day(had it been the 93 TOCA Shootout with all the Mansell fans it might have been a different story) and the latter by it being only a qualifying day

Indeed, that crash let to window nets being made mandatory for 94

The one that shook me many years ago was the Volvo estate hitting a barrier and flying. I don't remember who or where or if they escaped serious injury.

Are you not thinking of Rydell in the 850 saloon at Brands, who rolled after hitting the tyre barrier, when his throttle stuck open?

Having just Googled the above, then no. Scary mind. I found Kelvin Burt sideways into some tyres, that was the incident I remembered but I still don't know where. That was scary enough on television, God only knows how frightening that must have been for the driver.

So did Mike Smith in his BMW M3. (1987, Silverstone, Copse Corner, actually knocked the camerman over!)

Yes, I seem to remember Mark Howard creating a bottle neck on the start line (rare occasion he was in front of others!) and a few chaps falling over each other trying to take evasive action. Hunter got unlucky and ended up barrel rolling down the armco clipping the (badly) placed scaffold the camera man was on. Thankfully no serious injuries to anyone.

Well Mark Howard was only in front of others because there had already been a first lap pile up in the second race

Nice to read that Jeff Smith is out in a racecar again: a Mini in a classic race today.

Reading a short interview with Autosport it would seem unlikely he'll be back in BTCC; recovering but some way to go to 100% and he feels age is against him.

Let's hope he enjoys the run in the Mini.

Yeah, I think he’s resigned himself to letting his son do the BTCC now, but at least he’s racing at all

Actually that was 1988 and earlier that year, his team-mate Frank Sytner collided with Alan Minshaw at Oulton with Minshaw's car flipping into the air and over the tyre barriers.

Reminds of me of an incident Menu had at Thruxton (there I go again) in 1996, he didn't crash but he did end up in a ditch.

On the subject of smashing cameras, Derek Warwick on his Championship debut in 1995, obviously not his 1st touring car race as he'd driven a Toyota in the 1993 TOCA Shoot-Out.

"He's broken our camera lens! That'll be six grand please Derek"

And Menu isn't the only one to go off into the ditch there, there's been quite a few others

It was 99 in the Mondeo. Because I remember Vauxhall telling JC over the radio that the safety car was out because Menu was in the lake and he said "I hope he's packed his ****** trunks!".
