Classic Gear on ITV 4.
Anyone seen this program before? I have never heard of it but caught it yesterday as I was flicking through like you do. It was'nt half bad with a piece on the Healey 3000 which was interesting as I owned a couple in my youth but also a bit on the Aston Martin Racing Club which was also interesting and a probably well known restorer down in the south west. I will look out for it again.

Considering the fact that I had arranged for them to 'Track Test' five different cars, all of them with interesting history's and the numerous mails sent back and forth,I was glad they suddenly stopped mailing me,especialy after watching the rather painfull attempts of Chris Sirle? to sound as though he knew what he was talking about. Total rubbish, almost made Clarkson look like a star!.

Been watching it for the last 3-weeks as I am hoping to purchase my 'first classic' in the next year or so - I thought it may help with some 'do's & don'ts'. It's okay in that regard but some of the presentations are more wooden than the steering wheels on show.
A bit like Top Gear - in that only the odd bit is useful / interesting. |

Blimey are you lot are hard to please or what! Yes it wasnt perfect and the Healey wasnt a mint one either but its a whole lot better than that other show on Classic Cars. What one is that you may ask? Exactly THEIR AIN'T ONE!!!! And as far as I am concerned it was a whole lot better than nothing.

I can remember when there was nothing but motor sport on the tele. Rally cross with Mudley Talker saying"what did i say what did i say "when the Mini rolled after Mudley had explained to us about the carefully drilled holes in the windscreen. Then there would be Motocross and even those funny hillclimb cars with passengers jumping up and down. But none of that was as exciting as the WRESTLING at 4 o clock. Happy days.

Kent Walton/Jackie Pallo/Mick Mcmanus/ Steve Logan. My old mum loved it.

Many of us appreciated the diversity of those Saturday afternoons. In addition to the Hillclimbs we would otherwise never have heard of as young teenagers, such as "Rest and Be Thankful", we saw the autotests (Ken Wharton tests)?
Also that wonderful annual event between the Army and the London Motorclub, "Point To Point"(?) It was where we heard and saw stuff such as the Haflinger (with appropriate puns), saw the good old Land Rovers (before the days of Range Rovers), Bedford 3 tonners etc. Add that to the aforementioned mud plugging, the occasional circuit race or Rally Cross, and you had a brilliant insight into the different disciplines. However, motorsport wasn't on every week (horse racing was of course...) and we used to rush home from Sunday School to watch the occasional televised Grand Prix and cheer on Graham Hill, Jim Clark etc. |

Do you remember the Rally Sprints I think they were called, I remember Tony Pond belting up a hill in a TR8 and the all new metro 6R4. I guess you could say however with Motors TV etc there is infact more on TV these days if you are prepared to pay for the privilage then get ads chucked at you every five minutes. I would pay if I didnt have to have that wretched kickball and I am not making a contribution to those prima donna's coffers.

I dont remember any of that Iain, must be the age difference between us. Weren't the holes meant to aid forward vision, and I think it was Keith Ripp, picture of the roll used to be on Plastic Padding tin's,[ so I'm told. |

I think you're right Terence, sure it was Rippy. When you saw him get out, there he was wearing a crash helmet, duffel coat, jeans, roll neck sweater. HANS device? 8856-2000 overalls? Snell-whatever helmet?
Thank goodness we've seen sense these days |
