'Surviving' Audi R10 crashed in testing

In private testing at Sebring this week following the 12 Hour race, the winning #2 Audi R10 crashed heavily with McNish at the wheel...he was injured lightly and treated at local medical facilities.

No reason for the crash has been provided.

ALMS followers will recall that the number 1 car retired early in Saturday's race (for 'undisclosed' reasons) and still has serious problems. Apparently, the development program is not quite complete. It is reported that both chassis (including the remains of #2) have been flown back to Germany for analysis.

...LeMans may not be a 'lock' after all.

Upps!
When did the crash happen (what day)?
what is your source for the info?
It seems that Audi is having a development time again. Still remember the Alboreto-accident at the Eurospeedway.
As for Le Mans I agree - the bumpy roads at Sebring may not be enough to emulate the additional high-speed requirements at la Sarthe. A 1-2 would be a well earned Result for Audi.

No it would not. IMO

This testing crash has already been discussed in the "AUDI R10" thread...

I reported on this a couple of days ago on the 'Audi R10' thread.

There's more detail in my post here http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...95#post1558095

Alternatively the full article is on Daily Sportscar, 23rd March.

The photos I have seen show the car upside down against the barrier.

Witness's say the front of the car was lifting and either bodywork came of or it flipped after hitting a bump.

Either way it was a heavy crash that is a bit of a concern as it will hamper the preparation for the season.

Just to add that the Audi report differs saying it flipped after hitting the barrier.

So did it flip before or after hitting the barrier?

This is the quote from Martyn Pass:

"About 30 minutes before the end of the private Audi Sport test session at Sebring, Allan spun with the #2 Audi R10 TDI in Turn 1 and crashed rearwards into the tyre wall. When the car hit the tyre wall it turned slowly over and ended upside-down."

So the car flipped over on impact.

There is a copy of that picture in this week's Autosport.

McNish said "the angle I hit made the car flop up on its side". The accident was caused by windy conditions, the car snapped on him and he couldn't catch it.

Not to worry

03/22/06 Unconfirmed reports say that wind was blamed for the accident. ...

03/22/06 The day after this weekend's 12 Hours of Sebring race the Audi team stayed in Sebring to run further tests on their new diesel powered Audi R10. Well the test didn't go exactly as planned as the Audi crashed and ended upside down...
sorry, guys, can't have this photo up if it's copyrighted - which that one is, whichever guise it's in. - p-c
