PR: Peter Brock to be Clarion Sandown 500 Grand Marshal

PETER BROCK TO BE CLARION SANDOWN 500 GRAND MARSHAL

NINE-time winner Peter Brock will be Grand Marshal of next Sunday's Clarion Sandown 500 endurance motor race in Melbourne.

The touring car legend's role will include flagging-off the 40-car field on its way to the grid just before the 12 midday start and waving the chequered flag for the winner after 161 laps of Sandown International Motor Raceway.

Brock is the most successful driver in the history of the event which began in 1964, winning in 1973, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81 and 84.

"The Sandown 500 has a great history as one of Australia's premiere touring car races and the name Brock is synonymous with that history," said Sandown promoter Jon Davison.

"It's an enormous honor to Sandown, to the event organisers PROCAR Australia and to all the competitors that Peter has agreed to this ceremonial role. Peter Brock is an all-time Australian motorsport star and his presence will greatly add to the occasion for his many fans."

Brock also will be at Sandown to watch his son James, who will be among the Holden drivers in round four of the Poolrite V8 BRute Muster series.

The Clarion Sandown 500 will feature some of the world's fastest production-based cars, including Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Viper and Corvette in a 161-lap battle for one of the most prestigious trophies in Australian racing.

Drivers entered include V8 Supercar stars Steven Johnson, Paul Morris, Cameron McConville and John Bowe, two-time former winner Jim Richards, triple Australian driving champion Paul Stokell and Porsche aces Peter Fitzgerald and Tony Quinn.

The first 10 starting positions will be determined in the Budweiser Top Gun Challenge qualifying shootout, starting at 3.10 pm on Saturday.
