To quote an Aerosmith song, I'm back in the saddle again. It's been so long I had to look back to see where we were up to.
Okay then... Q54. Who was killed at the Nurburgring in 1954, and who withdrew prior to the race because of this? (GP) Q55. Who took instructions over the 'phone in order to repair his Lister-Jaguar in 1958? (Not GP) Q56. At which two tracks did Greg Moore contest rounds of the FIA GT Championship in 1997? Q57. In which two classic French races did Jo Bonnier partner Graham Hill in 1964? [This message has been edited by Graham (edited 23 April 2000).] |

Good to have you back, Graham.
Q.54 would be Onofre Marimon, who was a protege of Juan-Manuel Fangio. Q.55 (I'm guessing) could very well be Archie Scott-Brown. Thought I'd jump in quick with these, before Michael beats me to it! |

Q56:
Sebring and Laguna Seca. Both times Moore was partnered by Alexander Wurz and drove a Mercedes CLK GTR. |

Q54 : Marimon / Villoresi - correct!
Q55 : Nope. It's Le Mans by the way... Q56 : Yep - Sebring / Laguna Q57 : "Le Mans" is not correct according to my book. |

Graham, maybe I didn't understand what you ment by a 'classic' race.
Isn't Le Mans a classic race? If it is, Bonnier and Hill drove together to second place in 1964. 1964: 20th/21st June CIRCUIT = 13.461km 55 starters 1. Ferrari 275 P - Vaccarella, Guichet 2. Ferrari 330 P - Bonnier, Hill 3. Ferrari 330 P - Surtees, Bandini 4. Cobra Daytona - Gurney, Bondurant 5. Ferrari 250 GTO - Bianchi, Beurlys 6. Ferrari 250 GTO - Ireland, Maggs 7. Porsche 904 - Buchet, Ligier 8. Porsche 904 - Pon, van Zalinge 9. Ferrari 250 GTO - Tavano, Grossman 10.Porsche 904 - Koch, Schiller |

Hello Graham, welcome back!
It seems so that I'm too late this time. Don't know answer to Q55, but Archie Scott-Brown is wrong. Le Mans in '58 was on June 22, and unfortunately poor Archie died some weeks earlier at Spa. Gerard is right with Le Mans, but I believe the question is not correct. If the word "win" is aded, then the solution is "Paris 1000 km" (Ferrari 330P) and "Reims 12 Hours" (Ferrari 275 LM). Q55 again: 2 Listers had been entered in the 1958 Le Mans race, # 10 with Bruce Halford and Brian Naylor finished 15th, and # 9 with Freddy Rousselle and Claude Dubois (Equipe Nationale Belge) retired with lack of oil pressure. I doubt that oil pressure problem (bearing failure?) can be repaired at the trackside, so I guess that # 10 could be repaired successfully. However, who of the drivers - Halford or Naylor - it was I cannot say.

Like I say, my trivia bookp makes no mention of Le Mans. The other race I was looking for was mentioned about - Reims 12H. But it sparked a bit of debate, so not totally useless.
Brian Naylor was the bloke (apparently). I've never heard of him. Where DO you get all this info. You lot surely can't get it from memory alone. I want some good books on these subjects, so suggest some please. What do you have? [This message has been edited by Graham (edited 24 April 2000).] |

Sounds interesting. I've already heard of the Archie book - seems like it's a must-have. Yeah?

One of my best books is 'The french sports car revolution' by Anthony Blight. Unfortunately A.B. died before finishing his fantastic work and it is the merit of his wive and his assistant, who struggled sighting his notes and finished the last quarter of the book. It is telling the story of Bugatti, Delahaye, Anthony Lago, Delage and all the involved people as Amadee Gordini, Lucy O'Reilly-Shell, Louis Dryfus, and, and and ...
Very expensive - but it is it worth! P.S.: The only teardrop: No virtually help in my research about the 'Ecuries francaises' |
