Pronunciation
I thought it was 'Pan-TA-no' and 'Kleen'. But the ITV lot pronounced them 'PAN - t'n - o' and 'Klee - uhn'. It took them a while to decide on how to pronounce 'Raikkonen', though, so who knows?
Do you? |

Christian Klien's surname is pronounced to rhyme with clean as opposed to the more common spelling of Klein Austria/Germany which is pronounced to rhyme with line.

I have to say my four year old lad, who's mad on F1 immediately called him Pants-tano and laughed.
Trust that isn't prophetic for him! Last edited by Hugh Jarce; 7 Mar 2004 at 19:37. |

It used to be the same with Senna, sometimes it was AIRton and other times it was EYE-AIRton

With Senna it was a case of people getting it wrong. His name was Eye-air-ton.
Likewise, the current world champion is Meek-eye-l not Mike-ul. |

Apparently Italian stations are calling him PAN - ta - no so maybe they were almost right about that.
I've wondered about Michael, too. But Ralf calls him Mike - ul, at least when speaking English. And is the 'ch' maybe pronounced as in 'loch'? |

The ch in Schumacher is like in loch.
We Scots can manage it but the English call him Schu-mack-er. |

"Ah" is an open "a", definitely NOT sounding like "ä" (in German) or "è" (in French). For example, David Hobbs pronounces "Ärtun" - this is wrong. James Hunt used to pronouce something like "Aeewrt'n", which is not correct either. The stress is on "eer". "Ah" and "eer" are pronounced tightly together but with distinctive sounds. This is a typical "Brazilian trick" that foreigners usually take some time to master. Also, the final "ton" is pronouncedly nasal - another particularity of the Portuguese variant spoken in Brazil. |

Michael Schumacher is pronounced "Really bloody fast"
Christian Klien is pronounced "Not all that fast" Giorgio Pantano is pronounced "Pretty bloody slow, really" |

I've noticed that Martin Brundle sometimes seems to have trouble pronouncing DC's name.
Sometimes it's CoultHard others it's Coult-ard. Being his manager, i thought Martin would know his own drivers name by now |

And I thought Franchetti was
Fran-Ketty But when Dario did a little "Hi i'm Dario..." on channel ten he said "Fran-Kee-tee"... |

His name is Franchitti, not Franchetti, so it had to sound Frankeetee. In Italian the sound made by the letter c depends on the vowel placed after it. If it is an a, o, or u, it sounds like an English "k". But if the c is followed by an e or an i, it sounds like "tsch". In order to make sounds like "ke" and "ki" an h is inserted between the c and the vowel - creating che and chi. So: Italian spelling >> sound ca >> ka ce >> tsche ci >> tschee co >> ko cu >> koo che >> ke chi >> kee (like Franchitti - and my own name!) Cheers, Muzza |
