Another large field for this ultra competitive championship this year. First rounds were held at Barcelona, Nathanael Berthon won race 1 and former British F3 driver Albert Costa won race 2. Felix da Costa leads the way though with 2nd and 3rd place finishes. UK runner James Calado took 5th place in round 2.
Standings after 2 rounds: 1. António Félix da Costa Motopark Academy 22 2. Albert Costa Epsilon Euskadi 16 3. Miquel Monrás SG Formula 16 4. Nathanael Berthon Epsilon Euskadi 15 5. Albert Costa claimed his 3rd and 4th poles of the season, unbeaten so far in qualifying. He looks like a good talent, despite not making an impression in the British F3 National class in 2007. Da Costa is still consistent, he finished 2nd to Valterri Bottas in the NEC last year so he should be a contender. Kevin Magnussen going well, son of Jan, maybe he could follow his dad into F1?! Adam Christo doesn't seem to be on it which must be the first time ever. He is with MP Motorsport who don't seem to be front runners.
Qualifying round 3: 1. Albert Costa 2:18.827 2. Kevin Magnussen +0.444 3. Felix da Costa +0.513 4. Jean Eric Vergne +0.622 5. Adrien Quaife Hobbs +0.818 6. Mika Monras +0.831 7. Da Costa has taken his 4th podium in 4 races. First podium in the Eurocup for British driver Adrien Quaife-Hobbs. He is a good talent, has already taken a win in the NEC this year and finished 4th in last years FR Italia championship. More points for Calado too, does anyone know if he is doing the full Eurocup with Fortec? I thought he was just focusing on winning the FR UK title. |

Just to add a bit of background on race 2 at Silverstone. We were sitting at Abbey and had the perfect grandstand view as Albert Costa attempted a way too optimistic slide up the inside of Antonio Felix da Costa with the inevitable conclusion that both ended in the gravel trap with broken suspensions. Cue tossing of steering wheel from Felix da Costa and stomping through the gravel in disgust at his rival's manoeuvre. Costa trudged to the spot behind the barriers already occupied by his rival with some trepidation, I thought. Felix da Costa found his way to one of the marshall's folding chairs and spent the next 3 laps with his hands on his bowed head, helmet still on. Costa stood about 10 feet away, studiously watching the racing and therefore not having to look back at the Portuguese driver. Neither spoke a word to the other for the rest of the race, with Felix da Costa, now helmetless, continuing his occupation of the camping chair.
Post race, the medical car arrived to take them back to the pits. Both were required to sit in the back seats. The car left us under the bridge complete with noticeable animated arm gesticulation from all occupants (the Doc in the front seat included!). |

Fortec are in attendance again with UK championship leader Oli Webb, as well as Stevens and Calado. Looks like a disappointing result for them, although Webb was fastest overall on Friday morning. The top 30 cars were covered by 2 seconds in testing. |

It is, its been closely fought again. Not been much discussion on this championship this year, although the previous two years it has produced Alguersuari, Hartley, Turvey, Bianchi, Bottas and Ricciardo! Its ashame that da Costa was penalised, would have been even closer. Albert Costa has certainly moved on from his not so good campaign in the British F3 National class in 2007, he looks more of a complete driver now and still very young. Jean Eric Verge has certianly had a season of two halves and has closed the gap right up with a few wins. Its pretty likely he will be placed by Red Bull in F3 next year I reckon? They usually take the best from the Eurocup and put them either in British or Euro F3. Adrian Quaife-Hobbs is upholding British honour with some good drives, I assume he is aiming to move up next year too.

According to his website Aaro Vainio has signed for SG formula for next years Eurocup. He should be a real player, he's the current European SKF champion and World Kart Vice Champion at only 16.
Definitely one to watch, hope he translates his talent into single seaters. |
