It most certainly is! However it might just be from a different period to the B16!

another 1969 one currently being offered for sale in the USA for 195k US$....(See Motorsport Feb 2008). But:built by Vin Malkie in the early nineties, total restoration, ready to race and legal to compete anywhere....this is getting sick.

driftwood has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Well you can thank Max Mosley for messing up the FIA papers and allowing HTP to now allow continuation cars to be built and any fake car built from 1972 till now to be LEGAL to race
If i had £200k for a B16 there are only 3 or 4 cars i would consider buying
its far easier to buy a lola t210 290 type car etc than a chevron
even T70 cars are not sacred let alone the continuation car saga

Richard Mille was allowed to run a continuation car in the CER last. No doubt because he is a main sponsor of the event. Even the 2006 car owned by Martin Birrane ran at Silverstone in 2007....

Just a question: was there a B16 road car? I noted what looked like a road spec B16 at Castle Combe circa 1988 with the registration Q594 VHR. It had Chevron badges in the right places and a cursory glance gave me the impression it was genuine. I'd presumed it was a well-executed kit car, but maybe now is the time to discover once-and-for-all.

Any ideas?

(Some of) the Vin Malkie Replicas were sold as street legal, but I don't know if any of the original racing cars were ever road registered

I think the Street Legal B16s were all the VM Replicas. See my earlier post.

There are stories about B16s being sold as road cars in period and this might explain how Lola claimed to have built well over 25 B16s when well under 25 ever raced.

Well I have only seen one, offered for sale in Zandvoort in 1988, so I was reluctant to call all replicas street legal

Lola? Are you referring to the 10 Sbarro chassis?

well, I thought you meant Chevron, but having produced only 23 cars (in period, see your own post 1 in this thread ) I was not sure about your statement. Together with the replicas they may have produced now many more than 23...

I was quoting Peter Grant saying that they built 23. Chevron needed to have built 25 to homologate the B16 into Group 5 and did that by July IIRC.

Then again, I may be talking utter rubbish at the moment.

according to post #1 here, it was "written off" in Germany in 1970. There are many cases known where those words have been liberally used to recreate a new car using an old chassis plate.....

It does seem that many B16 buyers are not concerned anymoe if they have a fake /replica or a continuation car anymore especially in these days of HTP papers and not the old FIA papers plus the economy is good they have the cash and can get to do the races
things will change if we have a recession
only the true cars with continuous ownership and hisory will sell for the better money and the fakes will be sold off cheap

Dbe16-35

Roger Heavens and Mike Garton purchased DBE16-35 in late 1970 as a rolling chassis. Sponsorship was Castrol/Dunlap. This was one of the last, possibly the last B16 built. Due to a supply issue with FVCs, the car was fitted with an FVA for the first three race entries, and thus ran in the 1600 class.

At the end of May 1971, a proper FVC was obtained, and the car converted over, with the first race in the 2000 class on 5 September, 1971 at Nurburgring. It is believed that the bladder tanks were changed during the upgrade. Below is a list of the seven races in which DBE16-35 competed. Additionally there are two races where the car was on the entry list and DNS, and one race where the car DNQ.

1. April 4, 1971 Brands Hatch 1000km– DNF accident
April 25, 1971 Monza 1000km– DNQ engine (does not count)
May 9,1971 Spa 1000km – on entry list (does not count)
2. May 30, 1971 Nurburgring 1000km – 31st
June 27, 1971 Zeltweg – on entry list only (does not count)
3. Sept 5, 1971 Nurburgring 500km – DNF engine
4. Sept 26, 1971 Zandvoot 2-litre – 15th
5. Oct 12, 1971 Barcelona 1000km – 7th
6. Oct 17, 1971 Paris 1000km – Disqualified
7. Oct 24, 1971 Casablanca Grand Prix – 2nd

The following are pictures from the race at Barcelona, and are the only two known pictures of B16-35:

After the Casablanca race, the car was partially dismantled to provide components for the newly acquired B21 chassis and body. The engine, transmission, and four corners were transplanted to the B21 (believed to be currently owned by Stein Johnsen). DBE16-35 was then offered for sale in January 1972. Below is a copy of the ad from the January 27, 1972 issue of Autosport:

The car was purchased by Randy Berry of Marauder & Company of Potomac, Illinois. Mr. Berry purchased this car as the model for his Marauder Chevron kit car. Below is a picture of DBE16-35 arriving in the USA at Chicago O’Hare Airport. As can be seen from the photo, the car is still in the livery run at Barcelona. The back of the photo is also shown.

In 1986, the current owner purchased DBE16-35 from Mr. Berry, and began a restoration process. The chassis was cleaned and re-skinned by Mr. Berry in late 1986-87. The 1986 photo below, taken during the restoration of the chassis, shows the Arch Motors serial number AM70- 22. This is consistent with DBE16-35 since, according to the factory build record, it was the 22nd B16 built. While the chassis from Arch were not necessarily used in sequence, it is consistent with the build order.

Completion of the car was performed from 1987 to 1994 by Steve Cole, Cole Performance of Winchester, Virginia. Parts for the restoration were supplied by Chevron Cars Ltd (Roger Andreason), Vin Malkie, Lanan Competitive Developments, Steve Sheldon, and David Kopf.

dbe16-35 part 2

Recently, the bag tanks were removed for up-dating, and revealed to be the original bag tanks from the 1971 conversion to the FVC. The bag tanks were made by FPT with the seat tanks sequentially numbered. All bags were manufactured in June 1971 except the right front tank which is from May 1971. The photos below show the bag tanks.

The photo below shows the car in it’s current state. The car is fitted with with a Cosworth BDP which was converted to Weber carbs and gasoline. The owner does have an original period FVC engine. The car recently received an HTP certificate HTP-USA5453. The car has never been raced or wrecked since 1971.

This car is currently for sale. POA see classified section

Hi Jim,

Interesting story of 035. The more so as the car (owned in France) in the attached picture, shot during the 2007 Classic Endurance Race at the Nuerburgring, also sports chassis plate DBE-035. I haven't got any reason to doubt your story, but on the other hand there seem to be people around who must be able to tell something different.

Jim your story sounds very true and another car with chassis number 35 is a fake why do i say this?
cos my father owned chevron b21-16 which is the ex heavens car that the B16 was dismantled to make
that car was in sweden came back to uk I have now sold the car to another guy who will run the car this year

Why did Roger split the B16 up?
well its logical as most of teh runiing gear engine gearbox uprights brakes ( the useful and expensive parts) where all fited on teh B19/21 cars so why buy a totally new car when u can order frame and body and swap parts across
after all the B16 was nearly worthless as the rules had changed from closed to open cockpit cars
The only other thing Roger could have done was cut the roof off and make a B16 spyder car but then he would not have had a NEW car that would either get him sponsors drivers or race entry`s with ease
can u PM me the cars price
