Piccolo Madonie alltime lap record?
What is the alltime race lap record at the Targa Florio? There seems to be a discrepency. Some of the contemporary race reports state that Leo Kinnunen turned his final lap in 1970 at 33min.36.0sec at an average speed of 79.90mph, which would seem to be the alltime record. However Owen, and Rendall, who have each written overviews and summaries of the Targa Florio, ignore this figure and instead they each credit Kinnunen with having turned the fastest lap earlier in the race at 77.5mph.If this is true that would mean that the actual alltime record was set by Helmut Marko on the final lap of the 1972 event(@79.52mph).
Did Owen simply repeat a Rendall error or vice-versa?Did they each make the same mistake independently, or, is there really a serious doubt about the accuracy of the time reportedly turned in by Kinnunen on his last lap in 1970?I believe that Kinnunen claims the record for himself.Does Dr. Marko dispute that claim?I assume he wouldn't without evidence, since he's a Judge. While 1973 was the last year that the Targa was run as a World Championship event, it continued in 1974 and 1975(tragically) as an Italian National event with prototypes restricted to 2 liters.Did the lap record possibly fall in one of those years?
