Michael seems to be slightly better on his tyres this year, and at the end of the stints starts closing down on Rosberg. It's just a shame he's become such an awful qualifier because if he was starting ahead, and without any mistakes, Rosberg would probably never beat him.
Unfortunately for Schumacher, and his fans, the only thing that counts is the end points tally.

Likewise, a lot was made of Massa finally outqualifying Alonso, but if you lose track position to him in the first few laps, what does it matter?

Because : "Fernando is faster than you. Do you understand, Felipe?".

Felipe, sadly isn't the man he was before 2009. I always think he was going to struggle with Alonso. Alonso doesn't like his team mate challenging him. Whilst Felipe has improved some what, I don't think he is going to take a win any time soon.

Anyone remember the Silverstone 2007 quali session? Hamilton on pole, his dad doing fist pumps in the pits, the crowd (minus me i must add) going nuts, and what happened? His team mate won the race the next day!

Even at Hungary, early in the rain he dropped back behind a few guys and seemed to be struggling - Rosberg was doing a better job of holding off the Ferrari's - but once they got onto the dry tires MS was closing on Rosberg, as was Di Resta. It's unfortunate that they left him on the inters for such an insane amount of time that he dropped so much time (including behind Di Resta). Mercedes are pretty bad at race strategy these days.
Have you considered that maybe Rosbergs car is more setup for qualy to get a good grid slot, a setup that brings the tyres up to temp much earlier, where as Schumacher tends to focus on race setup?

This is true for a number of drivers, which makes drivers like Vettel all the more impressive.

I am impressed how Perez is starting to outqualify his more experienced and supposedly faster teammate the last few races. Not to impressed with his starts however. He is improving though.

(¿Someone knows how to make a wider "code" window? Now I have to use a small font to get it within the window)

Vettel, Alonso and Rosberg have busted their team mates. Anyway, Schumacher has done a good job in the last GPs.

Hamilton, however, has had a lot of troubles with Button (from a competitive comparison point of view) and now they are in a sort of equality, with a minimal advantage for Lewis that could be explained by random events (only 32% of confidence in that it is for real).

The remaining teams, i.e. Renault, Sauber, Williams and Force, will be updated later.

Interesting performance by Bruno Senna, particularly in the first three GPs. Apparently he equaled Petrov, who, in turn, was in advantage against Heidfeld.

Kobayashi and Perez have done a remarkably parallel season, their equality has been amazing (but with subtleties about qualifyings and race positions ). Almost the same equality between Sutil and Di Resta, none of those two has proved he is better than his team mate all-around.

In the crepuscular Williams team, Barrichello has had advantage but not enough to "prove" statistically that he is better than Maldonado.

Looks spot on. I might have guessed 'advantage' Rosberg rather than 'busted' Schumacher. A minor point. It is a very good indicator.

(Thanks, Adam!)

And now, the breakdown of scores according to session (Qual, Fastest Lap, Race):

Code:
TEAM QUAL FLAP RACE
============================
VET-WEB 15-3** 8-10 16-2** VET>WEB in qual and race
HAM-BUT 12-6 8-10 9-9
ALO-MAS 14-4* 11-7 15-3** ALO>MAS in qual and race
ROS-SCH 15-3** 11-7 11-7 ROS>SCH in qual
HEI-PET 3-8 3-8 6-5
SEN-PET 3-4 4-3 3-4
KOB-PER 8-9 9-8 8-8
BAR-MAL 9-9 12-6 12-6
SUT-DIR 9-9 10-8 10-8
============================
I have signaled with one or two asterisks the cases where a significant advantage was achieved.

An interesting point is Webber good score against Vettel in Fastest Laps. There are three likely reasons: (a) we have discussed here that this season FLs can be misleading (tyres, strategy), (b) Vettel has been so much time in first position that he has not needed a higher pace in races, (c) perhaps Webber is really a match for Vettel in race pace like last season. Interestingly, in the last races Vettel fought explicitly to achieve a good fastest lap even risking his race win.

And finally the "strange" race_craft - raw_speed index . A positive value means the first driver is better mostly in raw speed, a negative one means the first driver is better mostly in race craft. A zero or small value means the driver was not particularly biased for raw speed or race craft. All of that is in comparison with his team mate.

The index is calculated as the advantage in qual minus the advantage in fastest lap.

Code:
"Raw-speed" -- "race-craft" index
--------------------------------------------------------
VET-WEB +14 VET's main strength was raw speed
HAM-BUT +8 HAM's main strength was raw speed
ALO-MAS +6 ALO's main strength was raw speed
ROS-SCH +8 ROS's main strength was raw speed
HEI-PET 0 PET & HEI were of similar type
PET-SEN +2 PET's main strength possibly was raw speed
KOB-PER -2 KOB's main strength possibly was race craft
BAR-MAL -6 BAR's main strength was race craft
SUT-DIR -2 SUT's main strength possibly was race craft
--------------------------------------------------------
In terms of raw speed, Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso and Rosberg dominated their team mates. However, Barrichello dominated Maldonado in race craft.

Me too. I would have thought Rosberg would have a large advantage, so it points strongly towards Schumacher's upturn in form not being anywhere near enough to him reaching the equality with Rosberg he has been perceived as getting. I thought it amusing to hear Schumacher say post-race he didn't fight Rosberg too hard when he made that move. It's easy to say that when he was getting passed come-what-may. It makes it look like it was somewhat his choice to let Rosberg go rather than him being beaten by him.

Schummy - I would be fascinated to have a look at how Alguersuari and Buemi compare, and second to that Kovalainen and Trulli if you have the time. (Ricciardo and Liuzzi would be another one). Thanks.
