Was saddened to read about this in this mornings Herald Sun. Our sport is dangerous but it's times like this we realise how dangerous it can be.....

Fatal accident at Off Road event in Victoria (UPDATE)
CAMS Statement
18 Apr 2006

A motor sport competitor has died today in an accident during a round of the Victorian Off Road Championship held in Donald, Victoria.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:00am.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) will conduct a full investigation into the incident. In the mean time, CAMS and event officials are working with the relevant civil authorities.

CAMS has mobilised its chaplaincy and counselling services for the relatives of the deceased and for competitors and officials involved in the event.

On behalf of the motor sport community, CAMS offers its sincere sympathy to the families and friends of the deceased competitor.

CAMS may issue additional statements as further information becomes available for release.

Why won't they say who it is? Isn't it a bit disrespectful to just say "the competitor"?

I guess they want to allow time for all the relatives to be informed so they don't read it in the paper first. If it was me I'd want to be named in the paper for dying doing what I love.

It might have been a request by the family or they have been unable to contact the family yet.

Interesting that CAMS appear to no longer be circuulating their press releases to anyone other than the national papers on this issue.

As to using the persons name - CAMS never do name them in initial releases.

very, very sad news. Just a reminder how dangerous our sport is, not that we need reminding.
