"RoC" event at Munich's Olympic Stadium

Quote:
The DTM will hold a Race of Champions-style knockout event in Munich's Olympic Stadium next July, it was announced today.

...

The race format will include pitstops - with cars completing three laps of the track, then pitting, then racing for another three laps.

Saturday's on-track activity will represent a qualifying event, while Sunday will be considered race day.

"We want to bring the DTM to the fans," said ITR boss Hans Werner Aufrecht. "With this event we will set a new benchmark.

"The fans can look forward to a very special atmosphere - it will be dramatic and spectacular."

Aufrecht added that the ITR will look into the possibility of the event counting for championship points in the future.

Sounds very NASCAR'ish.
I like the the fact they include pitstops.
Why spread it over 2 days? They should do it on Saturday evening.
Including it in the championship is a stupid idea because it has not much to do with racing. Why make it not a charity event? Each driver is picking a charity foundation and at the end top 5 or so give their prize money to the foundation of their choice.

Nice idea as a one-off, although I found the similar format RoC event at Wembley very repetitive after the first few runs. Making it a championship scoring event would be stupid.

It won't become repetitive if they rotate venues.

The Argentine Top Race was to make a similar race, but in a smaller purpose-built circuit in Arrecifes (1100m).

Most likely the spread over two days is to allow greater revenue against the cost of track build and stadium hire.

The stadium tracks work OK for the existing roc but I'd have thought the space inside the stadium would make the track very mickey mouse and tight for dtm cars.

The roc cars all use road tyres too so if the dtm cars are on race rubber they'll need to heat them right up or just deal with gripless slicks.

Get the feeling that it could be one of those ideas that turns out really, really good or really, really bad with no in between.

I don't repetitive each year, I mean repetitive on the day.

Two cars go round for 2/3/4 laps, next race another two cars go round for 2/3/4 laps, next race another two cars go round for 2/3/4 laps, and so on. Obviously there's no real overtaking as they are in separate lane so aside from a plastic cone getting knocked over occasionally nothing much happens.

Ekstrom did a demo run in a DTM Audi during the Wembley RoC event which was very impressive but that was all tyre smoke, burn-outs and do-nuts, not actually racing, and he was using the oval around the outside of the track rather that the proper infield layout. The infield track was so tight that you would be luck to get out of 2nd gear for more than a couple of seconds.

Good idea in principle, things that would make it better:

Don't even think about making it a points scoring event

Demo runs from F3EU + Classic DTM/ITR cars

Star cars (M Schumacher for Merc, Vettel for Audi - they do ROC so why not?)

Fix the running order as much as possible so that it is always Merc vs Audi

Run it in a mid season break - say August (start of year in Munich could be a problem for weather, season end would mean comparison with ROC)

What about Midjet cars with Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class bodies? Instead of the RoC style racing real racing with 4 or 5 cars against each other.

Sounds like it could be a fun event, might make it on my 2011 hit list.

As for me, I'd like to see another type non-point event. Maybe hillclimb. Or some dragracing - start-400m-brakes-turn-start again-400m again-stop. And about points - I think it is stupid idea, or give them just half points.
And yes, no qualify needed, just two races, on Saturday night and Sunday night.

It would certainly be a laugh to take a fleet of them around various stadia with a mixture of ex-F1 greats and local drivers. No championship and event prize money for the winner's chosen charity - just to encourage them to drive those things like they stole them.
