There have been several stories in the media lately about the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident . And because I was there , I thought I would bring this one up .
Back then , 1980 , myself and a couple of friends used to do a lot of rabbit shooting , in the dark winter months we would ride around in a VW camper van with a spotlight and a couple of quiet rifles . One place we would go was Sutton Heath and Rendlesham forest which was covered in rabbits and we would often get 50 or more in a night , which the game dealers gave us good money for . One night we saw some Military stuff happening out in the woods , but gave it a miss because we were carrying guns . Couple of years later there was a big story about a UFO landing there . What had been seen was the light from Orfordness lighthouse , and a recording by one of the American military showed that the times it was spotted exactly matched the beam times from the lighthouse , and at that time the lighthouse also had Red and Green flashing lights pointing in that direction . But a story like that was going to get a huge coverage in the media and it is now rated as the biggest UFO story in the UK . A few years later I had a word with the MOD chief UFO investigator , and he said that they had never , in all of the time they had been going , found any evidence of UFOs , and his department was going to be closed down . Later , because he was perhaps the expert on such things , he got endless jobs on TV and the media talking about all the UFOs that been " Really " seen . And , over 40 years on , it still makes stories in the media today . Last edited by Tel 911S; 1 Dec 2024 at 12:56. Reason: missed a word |

Yes , the UFO stories are fantasy .
But a lot of the UFO enthusiasts are desperate for any thing which will keep their dreams going , and the media will blow these stories up to sell their news . But I was there and what I described is all true .The lighthouse beam coming through the top of the trees does have a very spooky effect , but can only be seen at certain times of the year when the leaves are off the trees , and only in certain parts of the forest . So I suppose that some Americans who had been partaking in the Christmas time " Spirit " had a bit of a laugh . |

If you think about it, there are a few common explanations for UFO sightings even in the UK.
The prototype Stealth fighter first flew in 1977! At about that time the F15 and 16 were just coming into service, no-one had any idea that America were flying stuff like a small bomber like the F117. It flew at Groom Lake and if you have ever seen one at night they do look oddly triangular and the landing lights also do. It is obvious they would have experimented with and flown them in the UK in the 80's at American bases, aswell as the B2 bomber at times. But this also does not explain some aspects of these stories! I love it, bit of conspiracy never hurt anyone!! |

Here is a study of the Rendlesham happening , from Dr David Clarke who is something of an expert on these sort of things .https://drdavidclarke.co.uk/rendlesham-forest-ufos/ It does seem to show that a big story was made up from nothing , which is what happens in the media a lot .And probably why these sort of things are often made up to sell news stories . |

Some years ago on the Saturday evening before the British Grand Prix four of were looking for a place to eat in Buckingham, which was pretty busy. Eventually we got a table in a small restaurant, and after a short time we noticed that Ralph Schumacher and friends was seated at an adjoining table.
This true and not blown up to sell newspapers |

Speaking of which, during the 1978 Vuelta a la América del Sud (aka South American Marathon Rally) a team skipped a control post and arrived at the next one in an impossible time. They claimed that a bright light took their car off ground and teleported them...

But I suppose they realise that some people want to read such stuff . But the good thing that comes out of it is films like "PAUL " with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost , definitely funny and a good p**s take on the UFO believers . |

My dear departed was always adamant that in the 50s she had twice seen a UFO - in two different locations - once on a local railway station where she dragged the station attendant out of his office to confirm what she saw. He obviously told a few of his mates, and that led to Blanche being visited by a dedicated UFO hunter, who had many records of sightings......
In the 90s, Blanche went to a meeting at a local hall where part of the topic was UFOs - and the speaker turned out to be the same guy......who still hadn't seen a UFO himself..... |

Been a bit quiet on here , so I thought I would stir it up a bit .
Up in Lincolnshire the other week , and went along a road I did not know very well .After a few miles I realised it must have been a Roman road . Looked it up on the maps , the A16 , and fairly sure it was . Amazing how a lot of this countries roads have been in place for nearly 2000 years . There is actually one goes along only 50 yards from where I live . So we are frequently seeing some of the history of our country , although a lot of people do not realise it . |

With reference to Roman roads, I used to live just off Watling Street, which is also one of the oldest roads in the country, It was paved by the Romans over an existing road thoroughfare used by the Ancient Britons.
And just a few miles up the Watling Street, we used to visit Verulamium, and it's park. In fact, when my son was living in St Albans, he would exercise his dog in the park and it was literally a stones throw from his house. And my other son's secondary school backs on to the park. |

I believe it went from Dover, through London to North of Birmingham . I was talking to a couple of Archaeologists some time ago and apparently it was only in the last 50 to 100 years that it was realised that the Roman Roads were mostly built for rapid troop movements around the country , and most of the goods / supply movements were done by barges on rivers , even with canals and locks . But the huge amount of roads around the country are a very long lasting piece of our history . |

Exactly my thought when traveling from Absurdistan to Manchesteralium via Dartfordmessium with a trailer! Only the roman galleys have been improved, inflatable boats now in use are more practical I should admit!

Asking for a friend: can a Roman chariot be RHD? If yes what shows the rear view mirror? Something like "Cautionilatus, horses that appear can be faster than your beefus?"

More true trivia.
Although our house was a corner property with an adjoining road, the rest of the road was a short cul-de-sac. When my twins were young, they often kicked a football around or played "cricket" outside the end house, and sometimes the young son - he would have been in his latish teens at that time - would sometimes come out and join them in whatever game they were playing. Also, his two older sisters sometimes did babysitting for us. Oh, forgot to mention; the son was George Michael. |

It is amazing the equipment that was fitted to chariots .In the film Gladiator , when one turns over you can see its air ram fitted underneath .

Anyway, the next people along the Peddars Way helped look after me for 3 hours whilst waiting for the ambulance that never arrived; they were coming to the end of an 8 day cycling holiday from the Dorset coast to the N Norfolk coast largely travelling only on ancient chalk paths/ ways/ roads. In our 3 hours we chatted a lot about their holiday and I discovered that these chalk roads sort of join up and are considered to have been used to move troops rapidly around England. |

Peddars Way was certainly there a long time . A lot of it is just an unmade surface now , but I am fairly sure it was used by the Romans . Coddenham , in Suffolk , was a major Roman fort and barracks , and there are Roman roads heading off from it in every direction .Although a lot of it has disappeared now , I think Peddars Way ran right through to there . |

When you start a Thread on the Forum, it usually has a specific aim, like reading of brushes with fame, and similar incidents, but here we are back in Roman Britain.
Way to go? |

I recall walking on the old historic roads in and around Luton in what is now countryside and walks, very odd that there is brick down from decades ago and the road is very wide to allow horse drawn carriages to go both ways, yet all that is left is a single track, it takes you back. I think it is called the Icknield way, apparently one of the oldest roadways in the country.

But I think the Roman Roads and our history of them going back thousands of years is much more interesting . |
