What's the Car, Moose?
The recent floods seemed a bit distant here, until this morning. This was the scene behind my unit this at 1100, and the water is level with the fire door threshold! Never happened before, but the top of end of the field which the water has run off is being transformed into a solar farm. This of course has ****ed up the natural drainage! I'm lucky, the units slightly lower than me may not have been. The MOT bay that is at the lowest point was just getting ready to abandon ship when I spoke to them! |

They're building a solar farm in a few fields near where I get powder coating etc done, it's on a farm, the whole site remains a meadow essentially, just legs in the ground, I don't see that would make it worse?

The foundations and associated equipment such as capacitors, cable tunnels, heat pumps etc. mess up the natural drainage properties of the surrounding area.
Nothing is free as you know. Solar power comes with its own impacts. |

The funeral of Motorhead frontman Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister will be streamed online, the band has announced.
The 70-year-old's funeral service will take place at the Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Hollywood, on 9 January at 11pm UK time. Rock fans around the world have been urged to tune in and celebrate Lemmy's life. The band wrote on its Facebook page: "With such limited space available on-site, we respectfully ask that you don't attend the cemetery... but we want you all to be a part of this, so we are setting up a live feed of the service via the internet on Motorhead's official YouTube channel." As this event seems to have attracted some attention among posters here. |

It's possible that the effect of solar farms (not the bird frying types) will have no major effect in desert areas but where rainfall is involved there may be more to consider than "experts" have realised. Still, who cares so long as the land owner and installation partner can cream off the subsidies? Mike, you and your neighbours should get on the the environment people at the local council and ask them for copies of the Environmental impact report for the development proposal. |

Thanks Peter. In this case there is also soil compacting (it's pure agricultural land) from all the trucks and low loaders carrying materials and equipment!

In a working field it might be ploughed after some time. Or plant growth eventually breaks down the straight earth compaction. But with nothing much going on what will reverse the effects? |

One to cheer Bauble up, some ****** has just come down a lane far to fast, rolled his MG ZX and slid into my Landcruiser, I'm not a happy bunny. Insurance say I have to pay my excess and hope they can claim it back.

That's bad news Tim.
How old is the Landcruiser? Might the insurer try to write it off? |

How much would people pay for a 52 year old VW?

its a 1999 one, this is my worry although it hasn't done much damage to mine from what I can see. Maybe a new wing and some paint, I'll do it myself if they start trying to write it off

Looking carefully at Tim's photo, I see a pink child's boot on the ground, presumably from the rolled MG. This worries me no end on two counts:
1) T*ssers like this with atrocious driving skills are driving around with kids in their cars! 2) T*ssers like this are being allowed to breed!! Hope the Land Cruiser's OK Tim. I suspect that if anything happened to my 80 series, any insurance company would want to value it at a lot less than I do... |

To answer Grant's point and putting my construction hat on from years back, whilst compacted soil will be more dense than non compacted, unless it is constantly under pressure, it does start to "relax". Witness motorways that need maintenance for subsidence etc. So I don'r see that as an issue for drainage.

In long term, quite likely. Unfortunately we are in mid construction at the mo. Think our landlord / farmer was more upset about his topsoil being washed away! Here's a pic taken after it stopped raining and torrent had slowed. You can see the solar farm at the top of the field.... |
